Beau shrugged. ‘You already said it – the stakes were high. Things had gotten ugly between them, it gets that way sometimes. But at the end of the day, Cory was his friend. They went way back. He never meant for him to get hurt! I know that the moment he saw the double sets and realized that Cory was in a hold-down . . . No one tried harder than him to get to Cory.’

Clover sighed. ‘How was he after the accident?’

‘Devastated. He was completely cut up. Things got pretty dark. He wouldn’t talk to anyone. He just retreated.’

She remembered what Ari had told her – that he hadn’t spoken for two months afterwards. ‘And Amy couldn’t get through to him?’

‘She wasn’t there.’ He shrugged.

‘What – immediately afterwards?’

‘It was all just chaos. I don’t remember when exactly I noticed she wasn’t there. But by the time I did, it didn’t seem important. Everything had changed so much. We were just focused on getting Kit through it.’

Clover watched him. ‘Why do you think Amy is saying these things about your brother now?’

‘It wouldn’t matter when she said them! They would always be lies. Kit never raised a hand to her, or any woman. It would completely dishonour our mother’s memory. You’ve got to put that in.’ He leaned forward, jabbing a finger towards her. ‘That’s what you’ve got to make them understand! Amy is lying. I don’t know why, but she is. My brother is a good man and it’s about time those that know him – I mean, really know him – stand up and say so. Because Kit won’t do it for himself. He’ll take the heat on this, just like he took my father’s punches for me. He sees this as the price he must pay for the fact that he’s alive and Cory’s dead.’

Clover watched him for a second, then reached over and turned off the video.

Beau looked shocked. ‘Is that it? Don’t you want to ask me more?’

‘Have you got anything more to say?’

He stared back at her, almost panicky. ‘No . . . I guess not. I just wanted to explain about our dad and how that’s proof he would never do what Amy said he did.’

‘You did an excellent job, Beau. You were compelling and really believable. I think a lot of viewers will be convinced by what you’ve said.’ She was. She could see Matty’s eyes narrowing suspiciously at her over his shoulder.

‘Is there anything else I should have said? I’ve got to help him. She can’t get away with this.’

Clover leaned into him thoughtfully, her elbows on her thighs. ‘Beau . . . you run Kit’s social media accounts, don’t you?’

‘. . . Yeah.’

‘So . . . you know his passwords?’

‘. . . Why?’
