He strode to the window, checking his new Adonis-like form in a mirror, and looked out over the city. From the sixth floor, he could see so much more of the city. Up here, it actually looked pleasant. On the ground, there was so much grime and scum that Clarke often wondered if it could ever be cleaned. From his current view though, Detroit looked like it may have had a chance to better itself.

Clarke wandered about the apartment. He didn’t have much of a chance to explore it last night. The kitchen was Clarke’s first stop. Clean counters, a gas stove and a collection of utensils displayed themselves, showing off Chloe’s propensity for talented cooking. Pans hung from the ceiling and a sharp set of knives were strapped onto a magnetic strip on the wall. Clarke smiled and thought about how Chloe took such good care of everything in her life.

Clarke opened the refrigerator and began looking through it for food, when he spied a note on the counter. It was written in fancy cursive with a big ‘C’ at the end. Clarke pulled an apple out of the refrigerator and picked up the note.

Richard,

My shift starts at noon today, but I’ll make sure to take my dinner break at six. Come by and we can talk about your new job here, and getting you some new furniture.

-C

Richard smiled at the note. He had a small laugh at his own expense as he realized how much he had been grinning and smiling as of late. Ever since the end of World War II, he had been on his own and kept to himself. That war really demonstrated his power to the world and made him a target of international glamour and ridicule. He never truly felt welcome anywhere, until now. Maybe he could start life over again. At least, for a while.

Clarke sat on the couch again, eating his apple. Now that he had gotten rid of the city’s gang problem, he wasn’t sure what to do. He hadn’t given himself much down time in the last sixty years. The closest he had was the time he had traveling between cities and countries. Now, he could catch up on some good books, watch the news, maybe see a movie. People had said many good things about movies. Forty years ago he promised himself he’d see one someday, but never got around to it. Chloe might want to go to if they were as fun as people said they were.

Clarke glanced at the clock. 3:09 blinked on the stove. He was still very early, but it might have been enjoyable to stop by the hospital to see Chloe. Patients had been coming by in smaller and smaller increments, so Chloe might even have some down time herself. Clarke finished his apple, tossing it into the garbage, and walked out the door, humming to himself.
