‘Australia!’ Her aunt’s voice lost all its sharpness and she blew her nose, before saying sadly, ‘It’s so far away, love.’

Her uncle patted his wife on the shoulder. ‘Well, Eileen, as long as the girl’s happy, that’s all we should care about.’

‘I’ve always wanted to go there. I did try to emigrate once, if you remember,’ Megan reminded them.

‘I was delighted when they turned you down,’ Uncle John said flatly.

Standing in the doorway, listening to them, Ben frowned. He hadn’t considered that aspect before, but Megan was getting something she’d been denied by marrying him – permission to settle in Australia. He couldn’t help wondering how big a part that had played in her decision to marry him.

No, what was he thinking of? She was the least scheming female he’s ever met. He stepped forward, clearing his throat. ‘I’m sorry to disturb you, but we need to eat lunch and then get ready.’

‘All right, then, Mr Saunders. We’ve had our say.’

‘His name’s Ben,’ Megan reminded them.

Aunt Eileen nodded, but didn’t repeat his name, just studied him thoughtfully.

Later, as she was helping Megan change into her wedding outfit, she said abruptly, ‘It looks as if you’ve done very well for yourself, my girl.’

Megan flushed. ‘Ben’s not short of money, if that’s what you mean. But I’m not marrying him for his money.’

‘Why, then?’

She sought for a simple explanation that would sound convincing and could only manage, ‘Because he’s gorgeous.’

‘He is, rather.’ Aunt Eileen gave a quick glance at her own reflection in the mirror, then turned to scrutinise her niece. ‘That’s a beautiful dress.’

They both looked at the reflection in the mirror. The slim, shapely young woman in ivory silk seemed a stranger to Megan. She couldn’t possibly look so attractive. The slender, ankle-skimming dress fitted her perfectly and with it she wore a large picture hat, with silk flowers around the brim. Hints of an Edwardian lady in the style, and yet it was totally in today’s fashion as well.

‘Yes, you certainly look the part of a rich man’s wife,’ her aunt repeated. ‘All My Fair Lady-ish. Now, let’s go and get you married.’

She hesitated, then pulled Megan’s face down towards her and gave her a kiss, a thing she rarely did. ‘And remember what your uncle said – there’s always a home with us if things don’t work out. And money for the fare back, as well, if you need it.’

‘I have enough money for that myself. Thank you for caring, though.’
