‘I guarantee it.’

‘But I didn’t catch wind of anything.’ Alex shrugged. ‘I mean, they’re worried about Vasquez and Wyatt questioned me about my friend, but that’s it.’

‘Your friend? You mean Jonathan Cooper?’

‘Yes,’ Alex lied.

‘Is he going to be a problem?’

‘Well, Wyatt wanted to know a little more, but I think that’s as far as it went. Although Sykes and a few of them gave him an ass kicking.’

‘Really?’ Sinclair’s eyebrows leapt up. ‘When?’

‘Last night.’ Alex shook her head. ‘Broke his wrist and everything.’

‘You spoke with him today?’

‘Yeah.’ Alex could see Sinclair’s irritation. ‘The guy travelled all this way to see me.’

‘Jesus, Alex.’ Sinclair slammed his fist against the steering wheel in frustration. ‘Not only could he compromise this entire case, but just associating with him could get you killed. You’ve seen the video, right? He has already proven to them he’s a dangerous man and for what it’s worth, Agent Alan is looking into him as we speak.’

‘What do you mean?’

‘Come on. A guy with that training and the balls to walk straight into hell itself with no fear isn’t just a concerned friend, is he?’

Alex turned away from Sinclair, ending the conversation. She knew she’d done some regrettable things to try to keep her family together, but she wasn’t going to give Sam up. Him turning up out of the blue was a shock. When she’d heard about Wallace’s death and the dissolution of Blackridge, she’d assumed he’d either gone to prison or died trying.

She’d taken her family’s fate into her own hands, and despite his best intentions, she hoped Sam was lying low. Wherever they were headed, Sinclair had promised her it would all be over. They would have enough to pin Wyatt to the cross, and she would be reunited with her family.

They would be kept safe, and everything would have been worth it.

She knew she trusted Sam.

She was doing her best to trust Sinclair, too.
