“We still have a few more questions.” Charlie wasn’t even close to finished.

“I want to help, but this is my business and, well, I’m busy.” Ms. Benedict reached across the desk and pulled a business card from the stack. “Here’s my number. Call and set up an appointment.”

“Yes, ma’am.” Charlie took the card. In Afghanistan, if someone had information they’d be kept until it was wrung out of them.

“Have a good day, gentlemen.”

Ms. Benedict disappeared down the same hall the man went down and left Charlie and Frost staring after her.

“I get the feeling she’s not telling us the whole truth.”

“My thoughts exactly.” Charlie pushed out a frustrated sigh. There was nothing they could do about it now. He stuck the card in his pocket. He’d be calling for that appointment. A lot sooner than Ms. Benedict would probably like.

The two girls who’d come in earlier were sitting on a bench near the door, filling out paperwork. Frost paused. “What does your shirt mean?”

Both girls looked up, startled at the man in uniform staring over them. “What? My shirt?”

Charlie cringed. He’d need to help the kid with his pickup lines.

“Savannah College of Art and Design,” the girl with pink hair answered.

“Are you artists?”

“Um, yeah.” Again, the pink-haired girl answered. Her friend in the SCAD T-shirt elbowed her.

“Deputy Frost?”

Frost held up his hand for Charlie to wait. “Is your art here in the gallery?”

“I wish,” the SCAD T-shirt girl answered. “That’s why we’re filling out this paperwork.” She lifted the papers in her hand. “Ms. Benedict is looking for new artists.”

“Does Ms. Benedict do this often?” Now Charlie was intrigued. Maybe this was how Sydney’s art was acquired?

“This is the only gallery in Savannah that’ll give art students a chance to display their art. A few of the students even get lucky enough to sell their work.” SCAD girl let out a heavy sigh. “If I could sell just a couple of my paintings, I’d be able to graduate with no debt.”

“Well, good luck.” Frost tipped his hat just like John Wayne.

“Thanks,” SCAD girl said.

The gallery door closed with a whoosh behind them as they headed for the patrol car. Charlie cranked the air-conditioning to full blast in an attempt to rid the stifling Savannah heat that had turned the car into a sauna.

“So, we know Sydney was an artist and this is where she sold her art.”

“And that’s about it.” Charlie rubbed the back of his neck. This was their strongest lead and yet it led them nowhere. He’d be returning to Sheriff Huggins with nothing.

“No. We’ve got more than that.”

“What am I missing?”
