Gracias, Madre mía, for sending me off every summer to live in Dominican Republic and for accompanying me there as an adult to revisit the places of your childhood. To mi querida abuela Leoncia Gomez and mi tío Luis Gomez, whose dedication to our family in Los Llanos inspired me to learn the history of the eastern part of the country. To the many family members from the Gomez, Cruz, Sosa tribe who shared their life stories and insights, including my cousins David, Ronald, Dre, Rolin, Manny, and Alex. I am especially grateful to my brother, Edwin Cruz, who gave up his laptop when mine broke down so I wouldn’t lose a day of work.

RICH, EVOCATIVE, AND
WISE,
ANGIE CRUZ’S
PASSIONATE DEBUT
NOVEL
SOLEDAD
IS A WONDROUS STORY
OF CULTURE AND
CHAOS, OF FAMILY AND
INTEGRITY, MYTH AND
MYSTICISM.

“Tinted with the magical realism of Gabriel García Márquez, Cruz’s first novel is that of man and woman, selecitve amnesia and persistent memories, redemption and survival.”

—KATORI HALL,
THE BOSTON GLOBE

“A vivid, breathing cityscape teeming with raw beauty, danger and magic.”

—DODIE BELLAMY, SAN FRANCISCO CHRONICLE

“[N]obody’s ever really given us such a revealing look at New York’s Dominican population before, with its mix of working-class solidity and irritability from living on America’s margins…. Cruz, in this determinedly real yet often magical novel, offers canny in sights into family life.”

—MARK ROZZO, LOS ANGELES TIMES
