‘Come here, Sophie,’ Mrs Witrand beckoned her daughter to her and tugged her long, light brown hair out of its ponytail. ‘I think we’ll just have her hair down, I want it to be as natural as possible. Natural and timeless. Actually, that one you did of the Knight twins, they both seemed to be – well, I think they had bare shoulders. It was a lovely effect. Very classic.’

‘That’s easy enough, if that’s what you want – and if Sophie’s comfortable with it,’ Callum said. ‘I’ll need you to get changed into a towel, maybe use a couple of clothes pegs for security?’

‘Lovely,’ said Mrs Witrand briskly. ‘Sophie, you go upstairs and get a towel round you.’

Sophie trudged out and reappeared in her towel some minutes later, still looking miserable. Mrs Witrand fastened it shut behind her back with two big plastic clothes pegs.

‘I hear you did rather well in those exams of yours,’ Callum said as Sophie took her place on the stool.

Sophie smiled shyly. ‘I only just found out at the end of the day, no one else at school knows yet.’

‘So I gathered. And you got an A+ in the Latin paper.’

‘I know, I couldn’t believe it! I honestly thought I’d bished up the English into Latin, did I tell you, it was super hard, sir, honestly I’d say it was as hard as that one you gave us that you said would be harder than anything we’d get in the exam.’

Callum kept her talking while he snapped away. After he’d taken about twenty pictures he flicked back through them to see if any would do.

‘Sophie, if you don’t mind – there’s a bit of towel sticking up, just by your left armpit – could you tuck that under for me?’

Blushing, Sophie rearranged the towel.

‘In fact,’ said Callum, putting his camera down and stepping up beside her, ‘I think this needs to be a bit lower all the way round – we’ll have to undo those clothes pegs – are you happy for me to…? He glanced up at Mrs Witrand.

‘Yes, go on, go ahead,’ said Mrs Witrand.
