“Cady, please try harder to remember. I know it’s easier said than done. If you think about it, it’s the only explanation that makes sense. I would really like to know if the police tried to play it out the way we did or if they just accepted things. Hopefully, over dinner, we might be able to ferret something out of Mr. Denville. Anthony is quite skillful at doing things like that. If not, we’ll put a bug in his ear, and he might come up with something after he does a little research. Life is suddenly taking on new dimensions. By the way, what are we having for dinner, Mandy? I’m thinking we need to impress Mr. Denville. Why don’t we also arrange to have a few friends visit sometime soon. Whom do you think he would relate to?”
“We’ll ask him at dinner. I need to head for the kitchen so I can get dinner preparations under way, since technically it’s Anthony’s day off.”
“You wouldn’t have to do that if you’d let me hire a real cook.”
“Stop right there, Lola Jor Dan. You won’t eat anyone else’s cooking but mine and Anthony’s, and you know it. Besides, I love to cook. When people eat it, that is,” she mumbled.
“Who do you think called the police that day?” Cady asked.
“I think it was Peter Danson,” Lola said.
“I think so, too. Mainly because you had such a good relationship with him. He’s a lawyer, and I think he must have had a strong sense of right and wrong back then that carried him toward the law. Do you have an opinion, Cady?” Anthony asked.
“I was leaning toward Pete, too.”
“Are you anxious about your dinner date with Boomer?”
Cady grimaced as she stared at her grandmother. “Yes, actually I am. I’ve been more or less out of circulation for a while.”
Lola glanced over at Anthony and nodded sagely. For his benefit she explained, “What that means, Anthony, is this. Cady hasn’t had a date in a long time because she burrowed in and had her nose in books all these years. Relationships pose a risk to one’s mental processes. If one doesn’t put one’s heart out there, then one doesn’t get it broken. Am I right, Cady?”
“Yes…no, men asked me out, but they weren’t men that interested me, so why should I take up my time or their time when it wasn’t going to go anywhere? I’m not one of those females who feels she needs a man to make her life complete. I can stand on my own two feet and take care of myself. I know how to open a drain and change a fuse, and I even know how to change the oil in my car. I mowed my own lawn and took out the trash. I also don’t hop into bed with the first guy that takes me out. That’s what they expect. Then they get all pissy when you ask them if they’ve been tested. That’s providing the relationship has progressed to where you are at the thinking stage of going to bed with them.”
