  22. Epilogue

Lola’s eyes widened in alarm. “Maybe her hair has become her security blanket, so to speak. Perhaps we shouldn’t ask her to cut it.”

Mandy waved her hands in front of Lola’s face. “She’s too old to still have a security blanket. You said yourself, she needs to get with the program.”

“I do trust you. She still can’t remember a thing. I’m thinking hypnosis. What do you think, Mandy?”

“I’m thinking you need to mind your own business, Lola. Let it be Cady’s decision. I have a feeling once she sees her old friends, the grove, and maybe goes to the cemetery, it is all going to trigger something and play out the way it’s supposed to. I don’t know anything about stuff like that, and neither do you. That means we shouldn’t meddle. She wants her memory back as much as you and I want her to get it back. Trust me on that, too. Just for the record, Anthony agrees with me.”

Lola knew she was outnumbered. The truth was, she knew that Anthony and Mandy were probably right. “All right. All right, I surrender. What time is that lawyer coming?”

“Two o’clock. I have everything laid out in the library. All you have to do is sit there and listen. Did you tell Cady who the lawyer is?”

“No. I was going to, but then I changed my mind. I thought for sure one of the four would have called her by now. The paper did come out Saturday night. Maybe we should arrange a little luncheon or maybe a dinner party.”

“We need to mind our own business. Besides, it’s a little soon for something like that. I’m glad now you didn’t let that reporter take Cady’s picture for the article. No sense in giving any of them the edge. I hear the elevator.”

“Ta da!” Cady said, running out to the terrace and whirling around for her grandmother’s benefit. “What do you think? Mona said this is the real me! This stuff in my hair is something called sun glitz. Do you like it? What do you think of the makeup? I look different, don’t I? I had no idea I could look like this. My head feels so light.”

Lola’s face lit up with a smile. “Sweetie, you look gorgeous,” Lola said, sincerity ringing in her voice. “You look ten times better than I did on my best day. Now, aren’t you sorry you didn’t do this sooner?”

“I’m still me on the inside, Lola. Doesn’t the inside have to match the outside?”

“It will when you dress yourself in some fashionable clothes. You don’t have to hide out, and you don’t have to be afraid any longer. We’re going to get to the bottom of everything. Take a look at all those wonderful fabrics Danielle brought. Look through them and tell me what you would like. Her French seams are flawless.”

Danielle Laroux was an elfin woman with dark, brooding eyes, incredible red lips, and a hawkish nose. One ear seemed to be bigger than the other. Her smile was toothy, with gaps in between her teeth.
