  22. Epilogue

The three old friends looked at one another as they settled themselves on the wicker chairs on Amy’s small side porch. A tray with three bottles of beer along with a bowl of pretzels sat in the middle of a little table. No one made a move to help themselves. It had been a long time since they had all been together. The fun times they had shared as children were all but forgotten.

“I didn’t think the kids would ever fall asleep. I’m glad Arnie had to go back to the office. We need to talk and get this over with before he gets back,” Amy said. “What are we going to do? She should have called one of us by now. Why hasn’t she called?”

Pete Danson stood up and jammed his hands into his pockets. He looked down at his two friends, and said, “If you were her, would you call us? I don’t think so. So, what is it you want to talk about?”

Amy stretched her neck to look up at Pete’s six-foot-two height. She particularly loved his curly blond hair. She’d had a crush on Pete her whole life, but he’d only been interested in Cady. Pete Danson was the one she’d wanted to marry back then, but Pete hadn’t been interested in her other than as a friend. So, she’d married Arnold Chambers. Still, every time she was in Pete’s company, her heart beat a little faster. How good he looked tonight in his khaki slacks and Izod tee shirt. He looked loose, ready for anything. One hundred and eighty pounds of manhood. He worked out religiously in the gym and was known as the best catch in town. Who wouldn’t be attracted to the good-looking, successful lawyer? She swallowed hard. Arnie had a beer belly that was starting to hang over his belt. The closest he ever got to a gym was to walk past one on the way to his parked car. But, he was an excellent provider, and that meant a lot.

“I heard you bought out Ken Agulera’s practice, Pete. How’d that happen?” Andy asked. For some reason his voice sounded belligerent, even to his own ears.

Pete raised his eyebrows but decided to ignore his friend’s tone. “I guess you could say I more or less fell into it. Ken came up to me on the tennis court a while back and said he was selling his father’s practice. He hung on a year after his father died, but his heart was never in the law. He took his inheritance and the money from the sale of the practice and is now a bona fide NASCAR driver. I hope to hell he doesn’t kill himself. This may or may not blow your socks off. I bet you can’t guess who my star client is? No other than Lola Jor Dan. I inherited her from Ken. I got a call yesterday asking me to come by her house to discuss some legal matters. That was before I knew Cady was back in town. The appointment is Saturday afternoon. It would be nice if one of you would say something,” Pete drawled, enjoying the look of amazement on the twins’ faces.
