“Amy’s doctors are having her transferred to a special burn unit in Pittsburgh. She’s not doing well. I guess she isn’t responding to whatever they’ve been doing for her here. I really don’t know any more than that, Cady.”
She has the nicest smile, Cady thought as she stared at the woman across from her. She’d gotten a haircut in the past few days and looked fashionable. Today she was wearing a tank top that was buttercup yellow with matching shorts and straw sandals. “So, when did you stop buying into the twin business?”
“When it started to interfere with my marriage. I’m surprised I hung in there as long as I did. Amy made me so crazy I took it out on Andy, and he would never, ever, see my side. It was like she brainwashed him. Look at me, Cady, because I want to tell you something before we both get so soused neither of us will remember. Andy told me early on in our marriage about that day at the pond. It ate at him. And I mean it ate at him. When you came back to town, he wanted to tell you. He tried talking to the others, but they convinced him to wait it out. He had his game plan in place. He’s had nightmares our whole married life. I can only imagine what it was like before we got married. He was going to pack up and leave after he confessed. He figured his life was going to be ruined. That’s what they all thought. They thought you would be vindictive and want to ruin them. If that’s what you have to do to put it all behind you, then that’s what you have to do.
“Amy was the one who said she would lie. She said she wasn’t admitting to anything. Andy said she was jealous of you when all of you were children. I didn’t know a lot of this until today, when I went to pick up Andy. You need to listen to me, Cady. I’m going to tell you what Andy told me. It’s the way he remembers it. Andy is the only one who remembers this, and that’s why I think he has been so tormented all these years. Amy threw the rocks at you. She got you smack in the back when you whirled around on the zip line trying to push Jeff away from you. She threw them at Jeff, too, but with a bad aim. Andy said the rock that hit Jeff in the head was meant for your head.”
Cady started to cry. Jill handed her a napkin.
“Andy never told Amy he knew what she did until today. She, of course, denied it. They all agreed, Pete, Boomer, and Andy, that they had made up their minds to tell you the truth before you remembered on your own. The reenactment was to help things along. Amy wanted no part of it. She left and went home, and what happened is the result.”
