“We need more like thirty minutes,” Myrna said, crowding close to Larry to get into the house. “Talking to a reporter is really very interesting. The time goes by rather quickly, then you get to see what you said in print. We’ll overnight you a copy of the paper when the article comes out,” she babbled.
Agnes Jordan motioned for the two of them to sit down. “Would you like some coffee?” Both reporters shook their heads. Asa Jordan scowled at his wife.
“Let’s start at the beginning…”
Myrna let her mind race as she gazed from Asa Jordan to his wife. Downtrodden and beaten were the words that came to mind regarding Agnes. Asa, in her opinion, came across as bitter and hateful. Perhaps his attitude had something to do with being in a wheelchair. On the other hand, from the look of Agnes Jordan, she’d almost bet her next paycheck that Asa had always been a bitter, hateful man.
She listened with one ear as Larry questioned Cady’s father. She decided to engage Agnes in conversation in the hope she would give up something Larry could use. “I went to school with your daughter Cady, Mrs. Jordan. I always liked her. I was really sad when the accident happened. And then her losing her memory on top of that must have been terrible for all of you. She is getting her memory back, though. That’s wonderful, isn’t it?”
Agnes simply nodded. The woman wasn’t going to give up anything.
“I never liked Jeff King. He was such a bully. He terrorized everyone in school, especially the girls, but he really hated Cady. Did you ever talk to his parents about how he bullied her?”
“No. Children have to learn how to get along. Cady never complained.”
Agnes Jordan crossed her arms over her chest.
“It probably wouldn’t have done her one bit of good if she had complained. The whole town is so excited that they’re going to be making a movie of your mother-in-law’s life, right down to when she came back to Indigo Valley to live. The tragedy is going to be included. Do you know who will be playing the parts of you and your husband?”
“No, I don’t know anything about it.”
“They’re going to be playing up the part of your husband real big. Playing him off against his mother and all. Her being famous and his estrangement from her.” At Agnes Jordan’s fearful look, Myrna said, “You know, Lola Jor Dan’s decadent lifestyle and your husband’s religious background. Where do you fit in the mix? Cady, of course, will play a huge part, or her stand-in will. All those years of suffering, and she was so young. You must have been devastated. Was it hard to leave her behind? People aren’t going to understand that part at all.”
Agnes shrugged, her eyes on her husband. I’ll bet she was pretty when she was younger. Even now, under the shapeless clothes, Myrna could tell that the woman had kept her figure. Makeup, a new hairstyle, and she would still be an attractive woman. She’s afraid of us, Myna thought with a jolt. There’s a secret here, and she’s afraid we’re going to figure it out.
