  22. Epilogue

“I think so.”

“The whole town is buzzing about it. Ted told me last night that Cyrus King is opposed to the movie. He said he doesn’t want that whole ugly episode brought up again. Ted works at the DMV, and Cyrus was there renewing his driver’s license yesterday. I guess he had some advance information, seeing as how the article was just in this morning’s paper. I don’t care what that man says, I know you didn’t have anything to do with their son’s death.”

Cady turned when she felt a presence behind her. “Uh-oh, you have another customer. It was nice seeing you again, Marie. Perhaps we can get together sometime for lunch.”

“I’d really like that, Cady. Call me, okay?” the freckle-faced Marie said.

Cady made a mental note to call the smiling Marie.

Outside, Cady untied Atlas’s leash from one of the broom handles. “Have a nice day, gentlemen,” she said.

Inside the Mountaineer, Cady took a deep breath. Mission accomplished. Now it was time to go to the cemetery. She’d never been to a cemetery for the simple reason she didn’t know anyone who had died, thus eliminating the need to go to a cemetery. She dreaded the prospect.

She slipped the car into gear and drove off, back through town to the outskirts where she knew St. Andrews Cemetery was located. She was halfway to her destination when she remembered that Anthony’s instructions were to buy flowers. She waited for a turnoff, turned around, and backtracked to a Giant Super Saver, where she purchased a bouquet of brightly colored Gerber daisies mixed with wild fern and baby’s breath.

Ten minutes later she parked in Guest Parking next to a shiny red Mustang. Atlas growled as she attached the tartan leash to his collar and exited the car. Where to go. How was she supposed to locate the spot where Jeff King was buried? She vaguely remembered Anthony saying there was a site map of the Memorial Garden near the main entrance.

Atlas continued to whine and growl deep in his throat as they walked along. She shivered in the spring sunshine and wished she’d had the foresight to bring along a sweater.

Not only was there a site map, there was also an alphabetical listing of those interred. Cady let her gaze sweep down the long list of names until she came to the K’s. Her heart slammed against her rib cage when she saw the name, Jeffrey Matthew King.

Next to the site map was a plastic box with maps and directions. Cady tucked the bouquet of flowers under her arm, her hold on Atlas’s leash secure while she opened the box to take a copy of the map.

She wished she could be someplace else. Anywhere but there. It was pretty in an eerie kind of way, she thought, if cemeteries could be called pretty. The grass was emerald green, mowed and clipped with no sign of a weed to be seen. The oak and maple trees were in full dress, their leaves shiny and deep green. Grave sites under the magnificent trees were probably at a premium.
