  22. Epilogue

“Who the hell do you think you are to come to my house and talk to me this way? If you aren’t woman enough to hold your husband, don’t try blaming it on me. I didn’t tell Andy to get a divorce. He came up with that all by himself. He came here every day to complain about how lazy and shiftless you are. He said you’re just like your mother. All you want to do is spend his money, money he works hard for. You don’t want kids because you don’t want to ruin that skinny figure of yours.

“I know everything there is to know about you because Andy couldn’t wait to tell me. You’re nothing but a slut.”

Jill had one foot on the step in preparation for leaving. She turned around and walked back to the swing. “And I am a slut because…”

“Because you are. Everyone knows it. People in this town talk.”

Jill dropped to her haunches so she was eye level with Amy. “People can only talk when other people give them something to talk about. I lived in Pittsburgh before I met Andy. I didn’t know a soul in this town when we got married. I was never unfaithful to Andy. If rumors are going around, then my guess would be that you spread them. I’ll get to the bottom of it with the help of my mother, and then, if I find out you’re the one who started those rumors, I’ll slap a lawsuit on you so fast your head will spin. Don’t think for one minute I won’t do it, because I will.

“Do you know something else, Amy Chambers? I think I’m going to make it my business to visit your old friend Cady Jordan. You see, I know all your little secrets, too.”

“I’m glad Andy is divorcing you. He’s too good for you,” Amy blustered, completely taken off guard by her sister-in-law’s words.

“Stay out of my life, Amy. If I have to come back here, I’ll come when your husband is here, then you’ll regret it. Leave Andy alone, too, until we can settle matters between us.”

“Is that a threat? That sounded like a threat to me,” Amy blustered again.

“That was no threat. That was a promise, and one you better hope I don’t have to keep.”

“Bitch!” Amy seethed under her breath.

The minute Jill’s taillights faded into the night, Amy jumped off the swing and ran into the house. She dialed Andy’s cell phone number and waited. She almost swooned when she heard her brother’s voice. “Andy, that tramp of a wife of yours was just here. She threatened me. You need to come over here right now. What do you mean you aren’t coming over because you just ran ten miles and you’re exhausted? Stop lying. You couldn’t run ten miles if there was a pot of gold at the finish line. On top of that, you’re lazy. It’s not that late. Going for counseling is the dumbest thing I ever heard of. When something is over, it’s over. I refuse to believe you are even considering trying to rectify things with Jill. I told you in the beginning she wasn’t the one for you, but did you listen to me? No, you did not. This is what happens when you don’t listen. I should cut you loose and let you drown in your own stupidity. All right, all right, I won’t call you anymore. There, does that make you happy? Remember what I said, if you decide to go noble on me, I won’t go along with it. Go to hell, Andy, I’m sick of wet-nursing you. Do whatever the hell you want. Just know this, brother dear, your wife said she was going to talk to Cady Jordan.”
