  37. ABOUT THE AUTHOR
  38. What’s next onyour reading list?

“I don’t know. We don’t even know what they were looking for. Maybe it has something to do with one of your cases, or Samantha’s, or Kyle’s, and I just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. Did you consider that?”

Javi watched her silently, and she knew what he was thinking. They knew each other much too well, which was why he was sitting here in her office.

As much as she told herself that everything happening could be related to any number of cases they’d worked over the years, it simply felt like these disturbing events had to do with Vanessa. She was missing, possibly dead. And Leigh was openly helping the police.

Not to mention doing some digging on her own.

Javi stood and walked over, tucking his hands into his pockets. “I’m worried about you, Leigh.”

She felt a pinch in her chest. Damn it, he knew just when to switch tactics on her.

“I’m fine. Really.” She took a deep breath and forced a smile. “Anyway, what was Tiffany Watson doing here? Bella said she stopped by to talk to you?”

“She stopped by to talk to you, not me. She was on her way to work, and she wanted to pass some info along.”

“About Vanessa?”

“I don’t know why you’re so determined to get mixed up in this case.”

“Yeah, you do.”

Javi sighed. “Tiffany said she’s been chatting up some of Vanessa’s friends at work, trying to find out more about some mystery man Vanessa was seeing over the summer. She said she mentioned it to you?”

Leigh’s interest was piqued. “Yeah. She said Vanessa went on a date with some guy, but then wouldn’t talk about him afterward. Tiffany had a hunch she was still seeing him.”

“Well, she was seeing someone. Tiffany said a few of their friends saw her with some doctor over there.”

“Saw them as in—”

“Leaving work together in his car, apparently.”

“So what’s the big deal? Is he married?”

“I don’t know. She didn’t really get into it. She was running late for work, and she wants you to call her.”

“I will. Thanks for the message.”

He was being dismissed, and he knew it. But he didn’t move to leave.

“I still think you should take some time off,” he said.

“Forget it. My trial starts Wednesday, and I’m not nearly ready.”

“Look, I understand why this trial’s important to you, but—”

“Don’t go there. I don’t need it today.”

He just looked at her, and she tried to tamp down her frustration. This was a touchy subject for her, and he damn well knew it, and she could only take so much drama in one twenty-four-hour cycle.
