  37. ABOUT THE AUTHOR

“It was behind me on I-35. He exited at Sixth Street, like I did. He was behind me all the way to my office, but then kept going when I found a parking space.”

Brandon just looked at her.

“I know, I know. I should have mentioned it last night, but I didn’t think about it. It just kind of popped into my head when I was trying to fall asleep.”

“What kind of truck?” he asked.

She tugged a slip of paper from her back pocket. It was a three-by-five notecard with neatly printed words:

Pickup truck

Black

Ford F150 or similar

Tinted windows

“You’re sure this truck was following you?”

“No. But he was behind me for, like, fifteen minutes. I was on the phone part of the way, so I didn’t really tune in until he exited the freeway when I did. I thought it was a little strange, but then he kept going when I reached my office, so I blew it off. Anyway, now I’m thinking maybe it’s relevant.”

He took the notecard. “I’ll pass it along.”

“You think it’s related?”

“Could be.” He tucked the card into his pocket.

A look of relief washed over her face and her shoulders sagged. “Thank you.” She sipped her coffee, and he noticed the worry line between her brows. “It might be nothing.”

“We’ll look into it.”

She glanced up, her green eyes filled with concern. “I’ve worked with some sketchy people over the years.”

“I know.”

Surprise flickered across her face.

“Some of your cases have been in the news.”

She sighed. “And I’ve definitely gone up against some real dirtbags in court. Some of the men I deal with—” She shook her head.

“What?”

“Some of them are volatile. The kind of guys who are allergic to rejection. Or who don’t understand it as it relates to them. They can be very vindictive.”

“You ever get threats?”

She snorted. “Uh, yeah. That’s pretty much guaranteed.”

“Anyone specific come to mind?”

“No.” She poked at the foam again, and he noticed she’d hardly made a dent in the drink. She just seemed to be sort of stirring it around. “I plan to go through my office today to try to see if I can figure out what he was interested in, why he was there in the first place.”

“What about the office next to yours? The associate?”

“Kyle. Yeah, it could have been his office that he went through. I couldn’t really hear that well when I was barricaded behind the door. But I’ll talk to Kyle later, see if he has anything missing or out of place.”

“You two have any cases together?”

“Not yet. He’s pretty new, and mostly he’s worked with Javi and Samantha. We hired him to help with our appeals workload.”

“Thanks for the tip.”
