The detective was turning out to be more resourceful than Brandon had expected. An hour after getting the tip from Brandon that Michael Lloyd was potentially involved in the break-in at Leigh’s law firm, he’d come up with not only the guy’s home address but a social media profile that led Tate to the West Austin gym where the guy worked as a personal trainer.
“I talked to his manager, and he’s off today,” Tate reported. “So, I was thinking I’d go sit on his apartment and see if he shows up.”
“We need to get his fingerprints,” Brandon said. “I don’t want to question him until we have concrete proof he’s involved.”
“I could do it surreptitiously,” Tate said. “Maybe he’ll, I don’t know, toss a cigarette butt or a water bottle or something.”
“If he’s a trainer, I doubt he smokes. You could put a flyer on his windshield and see if he tosses it. Then we’d have his prints on the paper. Or walk up and hand him an address and ask for directions.”
“Not a bad idea,” Tate said.
A text landed on Brandon’s phone from Leigh.
Where RU?
He stared down at it for a moment before responding: At the station. Why?
Part of him was still pissed off at her for lying to him—very pissed off. She’d broken his trust.
Another part of him desperately wanted to see her tonight.
“Let me know if you get eyes on him,” Brandon told Tate as a call came in from Leigh.
“Roger that.”
Brandon disconnected with Tate and took Leigh’s call.
“I’ve got a problem,” she said, making Brandon’s heart skip a beat. “Vanessa just contacted me. Someone sent her a video of her niece at dance practice. She thinks it’s from Mason and it’s a veiled threat.”
“Where is the girl now?” Brandon asked.
“I don’t know. Neither does Vanessa. I tried calling Kate, but she’s got a Driving, Do Not Disturb message on her phone.”
Brandon glanced around the bullpen for Antonio. Maybe he could get a hold of Kate.
“Vanessa’s freaking out,” Leigh said. “She thinks she can bargain with him and get him to leave her and her niece alone.”
“What makes her think she can bargain with him now if he’s been stalking her and obsessing over her for months?”
“She has something he wants. She’s been keeping a stalker log documenting everything he’s done to her, and he’s worried she’ll use it against him in court.”
Brandon didn’t like the sound of any of this, and he especially didn’t like the urgent note in Leigh’s voice.
“Where is Vanessa now?” he asked.
“On her way to Mason’s lake house. He has a standing golf game on Wednesdays, and they used to rendezvous there on Wednesday nights.”
