“That was my first thought, too, but no. The detective said they took all the doctors’ and staffers’ prints for exclusionary purposes. Didn’t get any hits. Whoever’s prints these are isn’t in the system.”
“Or if he is, we don’t know it yet.”
Brandon was right. Given the backlog of biometric data waiting to be uploaded—everything from fingerprints to DNA samples—there was always the chance the perp had been arrested somewhere at some point, but the database was running behind. Backlogs were way too common, especially when it came to DNA evidence.
Antonio pulled up the website for a dermatology clinic. “Check this out.”
Brandon propped his arm on top of the cubicle and frowned at the screen.
“Doesn’t look like any doctor’s office I’ve been to,” Antonio said.
The two-story gray stone building had tall turrets, fancy iron balconies, and elaborate landscaping. The parking lot outside the office was filled with luxury cars, including a silver Lotus, a red Ferrari, and a black convertible Mercedes.
“Looks like a French chateau,” Brandon said. “What does this clinic do?”
“All kinds of stuff. Botox injections, liposuction, cheek implants.” Antonio winced. “Stuff that sounds painful and expensive. They’ve got six doctors working there.”
Brandon folded his arms over his chest as he looked at the screen. “What’s the Tampa detective say about it?”
“I caught him on the way to a crime scene, so he didn’t have the file in front of him. But he remembers the case because all the doctors drove these sweet cars. And he told me he always thought it was an inside job.”
“Why?”
“Something about the alarm system. Either someone had a password or somehow bypassed it.”
Brandon stared at the screen, his face unreadable. But Antonio knew what he was thinking. Brandon wasn’t happy. From the get-go he had thought that Leigh’s break-in had something to do with Vanessa’s disappearance, and now he had corroboration.
Antonio also knew that he really, really wanted to get his hands on the guy who had attacked Leigh.
“So, what now?” Antonio asked him.
“We’re missing something.”
“How do you mean?”
“We’ve got two crimes connected by one set of fingerprints. Both crimes are linked to Lloyd, but they’re not his prints. So, whose are they?”
“That’s the big question.”
Brandon tapped his knuckles on the cubicle wall and stared down at the screen.
“Has Kate heard from Vanessa?” Brandon asked.
“She saw her last night. She said she’s still staying with Cooper.”
“Where?”
“No idea,” Antonio said. “Not at his place, though. I went by there this morning, and no one’s seen them. Has Leigh heard from her?”
“She told me Vanessa’s ducking her calls.”
“Do you believe her?”
He paused. “Yeah.”
It was only a second of hesitation, but Antonio caught it. Looked like he still had trust issues with Leigh.
