  37. ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Javi propped his shoulder against the wall, and Leigh moved her file aside because clearly he wanted to chat.

“You have a game today?” she asked.

“It’s canceled. The field’s too wet, so I’m headed to the gym instead. I just stopped by to let C.J. in.”

“Why is C.J. here?”

“He’s installing some security cams on our porch.”

“He is?”

“It’s part of our system upgrade. I told you about it Friday, remember?”

She didn’t, probably because everything since Thursday had felt like a blur.

Javi’s gaze narrowed, and he leaned over to shut her door. “What’s up with you?” he asked.

“Nothing’s up. Why?”

“Because you look like hell—no offense. Did you have a bad night?”

She tipped her head back and groaned.

“What happened?”

She blew out a sigh. “I spent the night at Brandon’s.”

“Oooh. This I need to hear.” He sat on the arm of her leather chair. “How was it?”

“Good.” Butterflies filled her stomach. “Mostly good, anyway.”

“Mostly?”

She took a slug from the coffee mug beside her computer. The pill she’d taken this morning had knocked her out cold for three hours. She’d woken up groggy and had been guzzling coffee all afternoon just to be able to function.

She looked at Javi, who was eyeing her with a mix of worry and blatant curiosity.

“The sex part was very good. He’s . . .” She trailed off, searching for a word. But for the life of her, she couldn’t find one. Not that she wanted to, really. The kiss in the doorway and all that wet groping—it felt too private, even for Javi.

A slow smile spread across his face. “Damn.”

She huffed out a breath. “Everything was fine, but then I woke up in his bed in the middle of the night and I couldn’t stop analyzing.”

He rolled his eyes. “Leigh. Seriously?”

“Yes.”

“You think too much.”

“What’s wrong with analyzing something after it happens?”

He crossed his arms. “So, how’d you leave things?”

“I tried to sneak out. But he woke up, and I told him I had a headache.”

He winced.

“What?”

“That’s the best you could come up with?”

“It was true. I woke up with a screaming migraine, and I needed to get out of there before I threw up in his bathroom or something.” She sighed. “And, also, I wanted to avoid an awkward scene.”

“You wanted to avoid letting him know you like him,” he corrected. “So, you had to make it seem like a casual hookup.”

“It was casual.”

Javi lifted an eyebrow, and she felt a twinge of annoyance.

“What?” she demanded.

“I was here Thursday. I saw how he looked at you.”

“How did he look at me?”
