  37. ABOUT THE AUTHOR
  38. What’s next onyour reading list?

“Six-two, two-ten. Big enough to have a size fourteen shoe.”

And with that, the reason for Brandon being at work on a Sunday became clear. He was still stuck on the law firm break-in. Because of Leigh. And he believed the break-in was linked to the Vanessa Adams case somehow.

Antonio looked at the mug shot again. Ross Collins was big and bulky with thick dark eyebrows. Antonio hadn’t met Cooper Collins in person, but he’d seen his driver’s license photo, and now he visualized the scrawny blond grad student who worked in a bookstore.

“Not a lot of family resemblance,” Antonio said. “You sure they’re related?”

“They lived at the same address four years ago. Maybe they’re half brothers.”

Brandon scrubbed a hand over his face, and Antonio watched him. He looked hungover.

Good. Maybe he’d gone out last night and had some fun for a change. Whatever he’d done, it didn’t seem to have improved his mood, though.

Brandon sighed and looked at him. “So, what are you doing here?”

“Stopped by to check in with Meyers. He wrote up the report on the Kelly Morris thing.”

Brandon frowned.

“Kate called me for an update about it this morning,” Antonio said. “You know she hired Leigh to try and get a restraining order against Mason Lloyd?”

“I know.”

“She thinks he had something to do with Vanessa’s disappearance.”

“I know.”

Brandon didn’t look convinced. He’d checked the man out already, same as Antonio had as soon as his name came up in the investigation. But so far, they had nothing to link Mason Lloyd to Vanessa except some office gossip and speculation from Leigh.

Still, Antonio thought the man seemed like a more logical suspect than Cooper Collins. But Brandon was focused on Cooper, for some reason, and had been ever since he learned that he’d been at the Rustling Pines campground the night after Vanessa went missing.

Yeah, it was a weird coincidence—if that was what it was. But Antonio didn’t view the guy as a viable suspect. And the idea that Cooper’s brother or half brother was in on it seemed like even more of a stretch.

Brandon’s effort to link Vanessa’s disappearance to the break-in at Leigh’s law firm seemed to be muddying the waters, but Antonio didn’t say that. Instead, he tried to sound neutral.

“So, what’s the connection you’re working on?” he asked Brandon. “What does a drug arrest in January have to do with Vanessa going missing a week ago?”

“Maybe nothing. I just think that the guy’s criminal record along with the black pickup and the physical description make it worth checking into. Also . . .” Brandon shook his head.

“Also, what?”

“There’s something off about Cooper. I can’t shake the feeling he’s lying to me. I’ve interviewed him twice now, and the guy feels off.”
