  39. ABOUT THE AUTHOR

"Sometimes. I've been playing on the side, performing locally, giving lessons, but my dream was to play for a renowned orchestra. Last Thursday, I actually got an incredible offer to be second violin for an orchestra that's going to play in Europe for two months starting in November. I was just figuring out how I would tell my sister that I was going to leave her in the middle of her pregnancy to go after my long-awaited dream when I got the call from the hospital about my mother."

"That was a big curveball."

"It threw everything into a tailspin. I have to give my answer to the orchestra by Monday, and I haven't told Dani yet, because I couldn't do that in the middle of everything else that's going on." I paused. "I think I'm going to have to turn down the job."

"Seriously? Why?"

"I don't know how long I'll need to be here. I don't know what's going to happen with my mom. There's just too much going on."

"You should do it," Kade said flatly. "You should go."

"How can I?"

"How can you not? You've put your dreams on hold for too long. This is your chance. You have to take it."

"What about Dani? What about my mom?"

"What about you?" he challenged. "Your sister has a husband, right?"

"Yes."

"And people who help in the store?"

"A few. But there's still my mother. I know I don't owe her anything, but I still can't imagine leaving right now."

"Well, you don't have to leave now. You said November."

"Rehearsals start in two weeks."

"A lot can happen in two weeks. A lot can happen in an instant. You only get one life, Brynn. If music is what you need to do, then do it. Everything else will work out."

"You make it sound simple, but it feels selfish."

"Your sister will survive. She can find a manager for the store. You can keep in touch with her. You can be supportive."

"I owe her, Kade. I don't think I would have survived after my mom died without Dani. She was everything to me. She was only born twenty-two minutes before me, but she has always been my big sister, my second mother. We are incredibly close. Sometimes, it feels like we're one person."

"But you're not. You're two individuals who can love each other and still have their own lives. Maybe I don't completely understand the bond of twins, but perhaps it's not the bond that makes you want to choose safety over risk. Maybe that’s just what you want to choose. And if that's the case, then that's fine. It's your life. You get to decide what you want."

"I don't think I've ever made a decision without thinking about Dani."

He met my gaze. "Maybe it's time to start."
