“No, I didn’t get hurt during that job, and no, my current assignment has nothing to do with the previous investigation.” Since the two of them didn’t seem inclined to end their cross-examination, she’d have to toss them a bone. “I can’t discuss an in-progress case, as you both know. All I can tell you is I got jumped and no one was around to help.” Until she stumbled out of the woods and Zeke had been there to catch her.

“You weren’t carrying?” Grace stopped eating the Fritos.

“Not on this assignment.”

Her two sisters exchanged a look.

They didn’t have to say what was on their minds, because it was on hers too.

However—since she had no plans to go into the woods alone anymore, there should be less risk going forward.

She hoped.

“How close are you to wrapping up?” Eve asked.

Not close enough.

“Getting there. I have several solid leads I’m investigating. In fact, I have to work tomorrow for a couple of hours, so I booked a spa appointment for both of you. Facials and a manicure or pedicure. Happy birthday, Grace.”

“It’s not my birthday.” Eve chomped on another chip.

“You’re there to keep Grace company. It’s no fun doing a spa alone.”

“Can’t you come too?” Grace popped a Frito into her mouth.

“Nope. I have to stay sequestered here. I can’t risk running into the wrong person and blowing my cover. Not that there would be much likelihood of that, but you never know.”

Grace shivered. “I don’t know how you can live like this. Sneaking up here in the freight elevator while a detective kept watch to ensure we weren’t being followed gave me the shakes. I’m definitely not cut out for skullduggery.”

“Neither am I—and after this, I’ll be back to regular detective work.” Cate sipped her Sprite.

“Like that’s so much safer.” Grace rolled her eyes.

“Do you really think you’re making progress on the case, Cate?” Eve swiped at the condensation on her can, watching her as if trying to discern whether she was being truthful. “You’re not just saying that to reassure us?”

“No. I’m finding out more every day. Trust me, I want this to end as much as you both do. Any more questions before we move on to pleasanter topics?”

“Yeah. A bunch. But you won’t answer them anyway.” Grace gave her a disgruntled look.

“True. So what do you say we get this party rolling?”

“I vote for that.” Eve rose and picked up the room service menu. “Let’s start by deciding on dinner, then we can pick out a movie.”
