As the two of them wove through the cafeteria to deposit their trays near the kitchen, they passed the table Cate was sharing with Kayla Harris.

She didn’t acknowledge his presence—but she was cognizant of it. Sparks of awareness radiated off her as he brushed by.

The woman who’d once given him her heart might not want to have anything to do with him, but her body was sending other signals.

A positive sign for down the road, after they were done with their undercover assignments and could reassume their real identities.

As they left the cafeteria behind, Zeke attempted to initiate small talk with Eduardo, but the man responded in monosyllables and quickened his pace.

More evidence he was spooked by whoever had come calling.

Will was at the front desk when they approached, and both he and the visitor glanced their direction.

Zeke studied the dark-haired, dark-complected man who was carrying a small parcel. Mexican, no question about it. A friend—or relative—of Eduardo’s?

He appraised his lunch companion.

No friend, judging by Eduardo’s grim expression.

At the desk, Eduardo took the man’s arm. “Thank you, Will. Excuse me, Zeke.” He led the visitor toward an empty classroom down the hall without offering any introductions. As soon as they disappeared inside, the door closed behind them.

Zeke turned to Will to find the security officer squinting at the duo.

“Everything okay?” As he asked the question, Zeke skimmed the visitor sign-in log on the reception desk. Miguel something. The chicken scratching was difficult to decipher.

“I hope so.” Will regarded the closed door. “In this business, you learn to pay attention to vibes—and I didn’t get positive ones from that guy.”

“A friend of Eduardo’s?”

“His brother-in-law. Says he lives with him.”

If that was true, Eduardo had lied about not having other relatives in the area.

“I didn’t think he had any family here.” He pulled out his cell and pretended to check messages, as if the conversation was inconsequential.

“He’s never mentioned any.” Will scanned the monitor behind the desk, which displayed the feed from various security cameras around the property. “I’ll talk to Eduardo after he leaves. I didn’t get the impression he was happy to see him—and we can put him on the no-admit list if that’s his preference.”

“Sounds like a plan. In this day and age, you can’t be too careful.”

“Yeah.” Will busied himself straightening the papers on the desk.

The conversation was over.

Zeke continued down the hall, once again playing with his phone as he strolled past the closed classroom door.

The low rumble of conversation on the other side was in Spanish, but hard as he tried, he could pick up no more than a few words.

Yet the ones he heard set off a red alert.

Riesgo. Policía. Peligroso.

Risk. Police. Dangerous.
