Chapters (42)
Except for the newest member Razor had recruited to his inner circle.
Wolf’s eye twitched. “This is your man’s fault. He’s made mistakes.”
“They were innocent mistakes.”
“It doesn’t matter.” He spat out the reply . . . but getting angry wasn’t going to fix the problem. Reining in his temper, he moderated his tone. “A mistake is a mistake. If the Feds identify him, he could lead them to you.”
“He said he wore a ski mask in the garage and there were no witnesses. If they knew who he was, they’d have grabbed him already.”
That was true.
“Okay. Let’s back up a minute. Maybe we’re overreacting. Why do you think you’re being watched?”
“I noticed a car with dark windows parked at the end of the block yesterday. I saw it again while I was out running a few errands.”
“You’re certain it was the same car?”
“Not 100 percent—but I got a bad feeling about it. And I don’t ignore my instincts.”
“I’m with you on that.” His own instincts had saved him on more than one occasion. “This isn’t great timing for a tail—not with a pickup planned for Wednesday.”
“Tell me about it. You want me to hand off the job?”
That was one solution.
But not the best one.
Considering Razor’s bad judgment with Miguel, who knew if the other members of his inner circle were also walking time bombs?
“I’d rather not do that. You know the layout at the school best—and I trust you to get the job done and deal with any complications . . . or unexpected visitors.”
“Like that girl and her boyfriend?”
“Her name was Stephanie.”
“Whatever. But we shouldn’t have to worry about that happening again, right?”
“Right. My inside guy will keep the area clear. As for the tail—to be safe, we’ll assume you have one. You’ll have to figure out how to lose it. Use a roundabout route to get to the van, and—”
Was that a squeak?
He swung around.
The area was empty.
Must have been the wind rattling a shutter.
“You there?” Razor’s curt question pulled him back to the conversation.
The man was definitely stressed.
That made two of them.
“Yes. Sorry. I heard a noise, but there’s no one here.” If this kept up, they’d both be paranoid and jumping at shadows.
Nevertheless, it paid to be cautious.
“I can lose a tail, now that I’m onto them. But what if the Feds are watching the access road to the barn? What if they move in during the pickup?”
