“That kiss would suggest the interest goes both ways.” Grace waggled her eyebrows.

“Don’t jump to conclusions too fast.”

“Is he still with the DEA?”

“Yes.”

“Why did you two break up, anyway?” Eve scrutinized her. “You were always closed-mouth about the whole affair.”

Cate tried not to cringe at her sister’s innocent use of that term. “Long story.”

“That’s what you said then.”

“Still true—and not one I care to discuss.”

“Hmph.” Grace expelled a breath. “All I can say is, you got the best birthday present of the day and it’s not even your birthday. If you see any other hot guys hanging around, send them my way.”

Eve grinned. “Be careful. You’re beginning to sound desperate.”

“I am desperate. Do you know how long it’s been since I had a date with a swoon-worthy guy?”

“Your social life is lacking because all the guys you hang out with are stiffs. I warned you there’d be consequences for spending your life in a morgue.”

“To each his own. At least I don’t have fanatics plotting to kill me.”

“That chapter of my life is over—and if it hadn’t happened, I wouldn’t be an engaged woman.” Eve wiggled her ring finger. “All’s well that ends well.”

“Now that we’ve dissected each other’s love lives, I’m going to take a nap while you two ladies finish your spa treatments.” Cate faked a yawn. “You never did tell me why you came back early.”

“We had a few minutes before our pedicures and thought you might be lonely.” Eve hooted. “Boy, were we wrong.”

Cate walked to the door, peeked outside to verify the hall was empty, and pulled it open. “Knock when you get back. I’m going to bolt it for extra security.”

“I think we’re being dismissed.” Eve ambled toward her.

“You know . . . I bet Zeke would have hung around and played bodyguard if you’d asked.” Grace joined their sister.

“At the very least.” Eve linked arms with Grace and they sashayed into the hall.

“Don’t hurry back.” Cate closed and bolted the door behind them, but their laughter seeped through the cracks.

She let out the groan she’d been holding back.

Of all possible moments for her sisters to return.

The scorching kiss they’d witnessed was going to be a hot topic until she offered them more details—and an indication of where her relationship with Zeke was going.

Trouble was, she had no idea.

He’d given her a lot to ponder—and process. After all these years apart, a reconciliation wasn’t going to happen overnight . . . assuming one was even in the cards.

But as she wandered toward the bedroom to rest her aching body, Eve’s all’s-well-that-ends-well comment replayed in her mind.

Could that be true for Zeke and her?
