Chapters (21)
On third down, Matision sends his fullback plowing into the line. At this stage of the game, with both sides fully manned, it’s a stupid maneuver. It’s smothered at the line for no gain.
With fourth down coming up, the Minutemen need nearly forty yards for a first down. T.K. hangs back to take the punt.
The Minutemen break their huddle, come up to the line, set in punt formation, then switch to a standard long stem T, quarterback five yards behind center, with a halfback to either side, the fullback split wide.
“They’re going for it,” T.K. yells, hustling back into position.
Matision takes the ball, and cuts around right end. He’s down Anderson to Myrtle, Myrtle to Grove before anyone can touch him. At that point, he has the first down easily, but he’s not through.
He smashes into a dry cleaning store and out the other side, swings up a fire escape and loses his pursuit across the darkened rooftops. He comes down on Revere. There he encounters his first real opposition.
Buddy Healy overtakes him from the side. Matision gives Healy a stiff-arm and tries to fake around him. Healy isn’t buying it. He hits Matision straight on, his short club flying.
Forbidden to use any weapons except his bare hands while on offense, Matision slams a chop at Healy’s neck. Healy slides partially under it. The blow still connects with enough force to drive him down and to the side. Matision takes advantage of Healy’s awkward positioning. He swings his steel toed boot around, landing it squarely in Healy’s groin. Healy doubles over, but his legs keep churning. No matter. Matision slams him in the groin again. Healy goes down. For good measure, Matision kicks Healy in the groin three more times. Matision then heads for the goalyard, located on Cedar between Revere and Pinckney.
When he realizes Matision has given them the slip, T.K. sends Minick to act as goalyard tender. T.K. and the other Prospectors shake their opponents and assume a zone coverage, trying to locate Matision before he can get into scoring position.
They’re too late. Matision is already at the goalyard. Minick tries to fend him off with his short club, but Matision is too quick. The Minutemen quarterback dives in low. Minick swings, misses, and Matision slams into Minick’s knees, breaking one and tearing the cartilage in the other.
The referee signals a touchdown.
The point after has to be made from thirty five yards out. Matision gives to his halfback. The halfback gets creamed at the goalyard, but he laterals to the center, who comes in after him, standing up.
The referee blows his whistle.
Score: Minutemen 7, Prospectors 0.
Elapsed time: Forty six minutes.
Casualties: Minutemen, none. Prospectors, Buddy Healy red-crossed for at least an hour with a badly swollen groin, Harland Minick out for the rest of the game.
