“You can tell Danielle that something came up.”
Kamila sighed. She couldn’t do that. She made a commitment. “It’s fine. It will be an excuse to wear my dalmatian dress again.” She did some timing calculations in her head. She could probably just make it on time if she left right after the fashion show. She could quickly change into the little black dress she’d bought for the Aim High party and take an Uber downtown instead of the subway.
“You don’t have to say yes to everything,” Asha said. “And you’re still doing Bollywood night, too?”
“I have to do Bollywood night. Everyone expects it, and I canceled last week.”
Asha shook her head. “Everyone expects you to take care of yourself, not just them.”
Kamila waved her hand. She could do this. Plus, it wasn’t like she was working alone. Tim was helping with the prom, and Rohan was working with her on the Aim High party. Kamila stood and gently put Potato down with the other puppies. “I should go. It’s getting late.”
Tim checked his watch. “Ack! Yes, I have to get the chosen ones from the groomers!”
After Tim rushed out, Kamila was packing up her things when Dad called.
“Don’t forget I’m cooking dinner tonight,” he said as soon as she answered. “I’m making the broccoli pasta the young Englishman on TV makes. Sorry, no. Not broccoli. Broccolini. Did you know it’s a completely different vegetable?”
“I’m just leaving the shelter now.”
“Okay, beti. Maybe you can pick up that bubbly wine you like? I have news to celebrate. Rohan will be over at six.”
Rohan was coming for dinner? Why? He hadn’t mentioned it when he’d texted her earlier today with some details for the Aim High party. “What kind of news, Dad?”
“A special surprise for you. I’m making Caesar salad, too. If my friends could see me now!”
Frowning, Kamila disconnected the call.
“What was that about?” Asha asked, looking at Kamila with concern.
“Dad has some secret big news for me. He wants me to pick up prosecco, and Rohan is coming for dinner.”
“What’s the news about?”
“I have no idea.” It was too early to make any decisions about going permanently part-time—the Aim High board meeting wasn’t until next week. A realization hit her, and her heart sank. “Actually, I think I do know. It’s probably about estate planning. Dad’s been finalizing his will for the last few weeks and Rohan is the executor.”
“Oh wow. That’s weird.”
Kamila sighed. “I know. Ugh. It can’t be healthy for him to think about his death so much right now.”
“I wonder if that’s why he’s been in such a good mood lately, though,” Asha said. “It probably helps him to know you guys will be taken care of.”
