“No. Text only. If the phone rings and I have to talk, we’ll wake up the baby. I keep mine on silent.”
“She really does know what she’s doing.” Parr’s grave voice was an echo of his own text to Mary Beth when he’d announced the imminent birth of the baby. “Let’s go.”
“Thanks for coming,” Eve said quietly, about to unfasten the front of her gown underneath the robe. Enthralled by her new sister, Carrie stood by the rocker, her chubby hand on her mother’s arm. “And thanks for the flowers. Give my love to Bobby Joe and Alma.”
“We will.”
A busy new nurse took a minute to look at Bobby Joe’s page on Facebook.
“And that’s me,” he explained, pointing to a selfie taken before the accident.
Mary Beth thought with annoyance that the nurse undoubtedly could have figured that out but was obviously humoring him. Bobby Joe was getting up to flirting speed again.
Nothing Mary Beth could do anything about. Plus he loved his new toy. Parr’s gift had been a huge hit.
“And that’s me with my best buds at a bar having a hell of a time . . . and those are the fantastic spareribs I had at the barbecue joint only you can’t see them because of the coleslaw . . . and that’s my uncle’s dog and—”
“Who is that darling little baby?”
Bobby Joe grinned. “Amanda Ross. She just joined the family. She’s my cousin’s kid.”
“Couldn’t be cuter,” the nurse said. “Okay. I’m all done. See you tomorrow, Mr. Weston.”
“Thanks for stopping by.”
Mary Beth sighed inwardly. She ought not to care that he was acting like his old self again, but she sort of did. It hadn’t been that long ago when she’d been thrilled that such a sought-after guy paid attention to her. And . . . a few others. Seemed like ancient history.
He had yet to mention Luellen. Mary Beth was willing to bide her time. It was a test. If he never mentioned that his former flame just happened to stop by, then he didn’t want her to know. Mary Beth was damned if she’d humiliate herself by asking the nurses about who visited him. She did wonder if Bobby Joe had assumed they wouldn’t tell her. Maybe former flames counted as confidential medical information.
“Mary Beth, want to look?”
He held out the tablet, but she didn’t take it. “You already showed me those.”
“Yeah, but I uploaded new ones. I took some of myself, and the nurses took a few just for fun.”
She shot him a narrow-eyed look. “What for?”
“I want to remember my days at Delta General. Every golden hour means so much.”
She had to smile. “All right.”
