He pushed himself up and made his way over to the roaring fire and the Bolivian soldiers who were doling out what was left.
“Hey,” someone said, taking Darnell’s vacated seat next to Andy.
It was Farah.
“Hey,” Andy replied. “Did you get some boar?”
“I’m a vegetarian,” Farah said with her eyebrows furrowed. “Meat is murder.”
“Oh, I’m—”
“I’m kidding,” she said, flashing her radiant smile. “Hell yeah, I got some of that boar. I think I ate his entire left side.”
Andy chuckled, then said, “Are you doing okay with everything?”
After playing the recording of Jonathan Roth sneaking into her tent the previous evening, Farah had told Andy that it wasn’t the first time a man had nearly assaulted her. When she was getting her master’s degree, she went to her professor’s office to ask a few questions about an upcoming paper. He locked the door behind her and proceeded to pin her against his desk. Luckily, she was able to kick him in the shin and get away.
When she reported the incident the next day to the campus police, they said they would investigate, but they never did. She was told not to go to his class anymore, that she would get an A, and to move on.
And so she had. But she’d been wary of men ever since.
“Yeah,” she said, giving his arm a soft pat. “I’m much better. Thanks for listening.”
“Of course,” Andy said, glad Farah couldn’t see how flush his face was in the dark of night.
Andy felt a tap on his shoulder and glanced up. It was Nathan Buxton. “Roth wants to have a meeting.”
Andy and Farah traded glances, then both stood. They walked to command central and joined the rest of the expedition team under the blue tarps.
Holland was standing near Jonathan Roth, and he was the first to speak. Holland said, “So, I just want to give everybody a rundown on what Rix and I found today. We hiked over to T5, looking for evidence of a competing expedition team that may or may not have abducted Dr. Gina Brady two weeks ago. We found nothing. Tomorrow, we’ll head back to the cache you guys found today, and then we’ll do a recon of T4, which is only a half mile from T3.”
He appeared to be finished, but then added, “And for those of you curious about Thomas. His temperature has leveled out at one hundred and four. Yes, that’s high, but it’s in the normal range for dengue.” He turned to Roth and said, “I’ve been as sick as Thomas is right now. And I can tell you that I did some pretty weird stuff myself. Thankfully, there weren’t any cameras recording me when I was hallucinating that I was playing quidditch with Emma Watson.”
This got a laugh out of most of them.
