How about that future he had many times heard Jesus mention in his sermons? What about that judgment he, Jasper Carter, must sometime face? Of course there was no such thing as hell anymore—at least, modern theology seemed to ignore it—but again and again he recalled the tremendous pictures Jesus had drawn in his New York sermons of a judgment, and a dividing of people hereafter. And as for hell, what was this he was going through now, if not hell?

As he struggled for hours with the problem of his soul’s relation to Jesus, marvelous events were swiftly impending in Washington.

His troubled sleep was broken early by cries of newsboys. What was that familiar cry? “Jesus is here! Jesus is here!”

Carter rose, dressed hastily, and went down to the hotel office. Even at that unusual hour, he found groups of men all over the lobby reading eagerly. He secured a paper and went back to his room to read it. He was soon completely absorbed in the narrative which he read, as all newspapermen are, sifting out the reportorial exaggerations of the story, and retaining the probable kernels of fact.

JESUS IS HERE!

In confirmation to the rumor that Jesus was in the city, he suddenly, without any warning, appeared last night, and of all places, in a little prayer meeting at the Colored Emmanuel Church on K Street. There were only about a dozen people at the little church, including the pastor, Rev. Isaac Howard, and two of his deacons.

According to the Reverend Howard, Jesus came in just after his meeting had begun, and spoke and prayed. He then stayed through the meeting, and at the close remained to counsel with the members over their church plans. He expressed himself as overjoyed at the progress of the Negro people in the United States, and encouraged the pastor and the people in going on with their great work.

Rev. Howard invited Jesus to go home with him, and he actually slept in the Reverend Howard’s home last night.

This morning he is to meet all the ministers at the YMCA building. The secretary of the association was notified of his meeting at the Emmanuel Church, and before Jesus retired he asked his consent to send out messages to all the ministers of the city to meet in conference with Jesus this morning. Jesus eagerly and with the greatest enthusiasm welcomed such a conference, and the secretary got busy. Before midnight, every minister and church was notified.

As we go to press at 3:00 a.m., it is reported that a crowd is gathering in the street in front of the YMCA. It will be difficult to manage this meeting and keep the mob out.
