“Nice outfit.” Clem snickered as Nate adjusted his blazer.
He flipped her his middle finger.
“You’re flipping me off?” she asked. “I’ve half a mind to finish the job Irene did on your nose.”
I wished she would.
“I thought we were all good now,” Nate said.
“We’ll never be all good,” Clem said.
“Fine,” he said. “How about I treat you to one of the honey barrels, and we call it even?”
He was playing right into our hand.
“Count us in,” Nolan said with one arm around Taylor’s waist and the other holding Quinn up against his side. Kaden may have taken his brother’s magic, but I still didn’t trust Nate. Better to have someone we knew he couldn’t charm keeping an eye on him.
“Irene?” Nate asked.
“I’m good,” I said.
Nate shrugged. “Your loss.”
Once we reached the entrance, we split up—half the group headed toward the warehouse to take Nate up on his offer of the honey barrel and the other half toward the VIP tent, where Mom had already pulled Mayor Stokes aside to explain the last few details of our plan to him. While she was doing that, we found Susheila and told her the whole story for a piece in the Yarrow Gazette. There was no way Yarrow was going to let the Bonners get out of this.
As we followed the mayor toward the massive stage near the visitor center, I caught sight of Clem and Taylor in the crowd.
“What are they doing back here?” I asked.
“And where are Nolan and Nate?” Kaden said.
“Let me go find out.”
Before I could leave, Kaden grabbed my hand. He pulled me toward him and kissed me softly on the lips.
“It’s almost over,” he said. He rubbed his thumb against my knuckles before I slipped from his grasp and wove my way through the crowd toward our friends.
“I was wondering when you were going to show up!” Clem said.
I pressed my lips together. “What do you mean? This was always the plan. Did you leave Nolan with Nate?”
I stood on tiptoe to look over the mass of people.
Taylor glanced around. “I didn’t even realize Nolan wasn’t with us.” Her cheeks reddened. “Or Quinn! All the work getting ready for the guests this week must be getting to me.”
I rocked back on my heels, looking from Clem to Taylor, the confusion clear on their faces. Despite the heat, my whole body went cold.
“You don’t remember.” It was almost a whisper.
“Remember what?” Clem asked.
There was no time to explain. I took off at a run toward the warehouse.
The memory shifted again.
