I could feel my aunts looking at me, wondering what was happening, but I couldn’t take my eyes from our newly manifested visitor.

I recognized him instantly. He had quite the distinctive style of dress. The red-and-white-striped collared shirt. The smart-looking suspenders. The fun garters on his sleeves. The bowtie. I had never seen him wear anything else. Probably because I had only ever seen him at work. No, the only difference in his appearance now, from the last time I had seen him, was the shimmering glow and the fact that he was slightly transparent.

“Brynn?” Izzy asked, staring blankly into the space I had focused on.

“It’s Mort Sweete. From the candy shop. He’s here.”

Or at least his spirit was here.

“Oh dear,” Izzy said softly.

“Oh dear?” the man shouted. “Oh dear! I think that’s an understatement. I’m dead!”

“I am so sorry,” I said quickly. “I realize this all must be a shock for you. But I’m here to help. If there’s anything I can do, please don’t hesitate to ask.”

“Okay then,” the man said, leaning back and pulling on his suspenders. “I’ve been murdered. Can you help me with that?”
