We dont know yet, Kate said. And honestly, we thought you might be a little concerned about what had become of their fifteen-year-old daughter.
For just a moment, Nick Sanders looked like someone had slapped him. He recoiled just a bit, his mouth dropping slightly open.
We spoke to your daughter earlier today, Kate said. Katherine. She was in Waynesboro. Apparently, she was searching for the address of Wendy and Alvin Fuller. Do you have any idea why that might be?
Still, Nick said nothing. He looked paralyzed and out of sorts. Kate also noticed that his hands were trembling. There was a slight tic at the corner of his mouth, too. While these werent telltale signs of meth use, they were indicators. She suddenly felt very bad for Katherine Sanders, realizing the influences she had grown up with.
Mr. Sanders, Jennings said, I suggest you say something.
Like what? he said, staring at the agents. You know, right? You know what happened with me, my wife, and the Fullers? Is that why youre here? The Fullers are dead…so what about Kim? Is she dead, too?
The name Kim did not register with Kate at first, but then she remembered Katherine telling them that her sisters name had been Kim. Before the Fullers had taken her, Mercy Fullers name had been Kim Sanders.
We dont know, Kate said. Theres currently a manhunt underway for her.
And given that, DeMarco said, we need to ask you about where youve been the last several days.
The reality of what DeMarco was suggesting slowly dawned on him. He chuckled, but it was an evil sound, one that was suppressed by a sneer. Are you fucking kidding me? he asked.
Watch your mouth, Jennings said.
Mr. Sanders, the sheriff tells us you wont let him look at your phone. Why is that?
Because its my phone. Theres private stuff on there.
Like what?
Again, he only sneered. He looked at the three people standing before him, studying them. Kate was fully expecting him to break off into a run at any moment.
Theres a warrant coming, Jennings said. All youre doing is buying about an hour or so.
And pissing us off, DeMarco said.
Kate couldnt be sure, but she thought she could see the traces of tears in Sanders eyes. Slowly, almost as if he were mocking them, he held his hands out to them, wrists up.
Arrest me, if you think you need to, he said.
Do we need to?
He smirked, but it was clear that he was nervous. He knew he was trapped and that there was trouble coming. My phone is on the dashboard of my truck.
