Next: bleached twins shook on a bed; two jointed wooden dolls lay cast aside beside them. The man’s chipped-black-nail-polished fingers shook too much to hold a cigarette. He broke a guitar, and the woman rode on his back in her baby doll dress, singing in her cigarette-rasped voice. A male voice, spoke: “The king and queen of nineties music in the act of destroying themselves reflect the devastation of our planet.”
A rapper in a yellow suit and his girlfriend in a red dress walked in slow motion followed by two burly bodyguards. “Note the way this king and queen step regally through the crowd. The presence of the bodyguards reflects the danger that trails them at every turn.”
The voice went on, over a clip of the famous 1968 speech: “In Tennessee, a day before his assassination, he imagined how he would fly in his mind and watch the people crossing the Red Sea to the Promised Land and beyond. And then, prophetically, he said that he would like to live a long life, but that his true purpose was to do God’s will. There is no doubt that he reached the Promised Land.”
The film of the former president falling onto his wife; she reached to hold him, then crawled over the back of the black limousine. She wore the infamous watermelon pink bouclé Chanel suit with the dark blue trim. The suit stained with her husband’s blood.
On the makeshift screen of the white truck, an animated re-creation of the event showed in detail how the president crossed his arms over his throat before he collapsed.
Jody yelped.
“What is this?” Izzy said, standing up. “Who brought this? Turn it off.”
She heard giggling and four red-haired children—the ones she had seen when she went to look for Cyrus—darted out of one of the cars and across the road to the blue windmill house.
While Izzy had her back turned, the film continued. A woman’s voice said, “Let your goal be to make beauty in the slaughterhouse of the world. Then you can walk the flower path in peace. Loss is inevitable, but don’t be afraid of it. The soul remains. It is the hope that allows light and love to flood and enter the void. Live with hope, with imagination, and with purpose.”
Izzy turned back around. Sky from the House of Hearts stood there, projected larger than life on the side of the truck. Silver jewelry inlaid with blue, red, purple, greenish yellow, pink, and white adorned Sky’s body and, even in her shock, or perhaps because of it, Izzy thought she recognized lapis, carnelian, amethyst, chalcedony, calcite, feldspar.
Ted walked over to the projector and flipped the switch. The sun had set and the area fell into darkness.
“That woman, that was the woman who used to come by the house,” Jody’s voice said in the dark.
“What woman?”
