Jeb said, “All those who have lost a loved one, say the name of Isis’s beloved.”
“Osiris!” they chanted.
Faint, Izzy stumbled. Instead of helping her up, Sky, suddenly at her side, brought her down to her knees on the tiles and knelt beside her. Izzy closed her eyes and breathed Sky in.
“Now we will all meditate in silence and envision our lost loved ones here with us,” Sky said.
In the quiet that followed, the only sound was the waterfall and someone sobbing. Izzy wasn’t sure if it was she, herself, sobbing.
“Those who have lost a loved one have given their strength to Isis, and Osiris hears her and remembers,” said Sky.
Ever tried to pull away but then seemed to collapse against Jeb. “Repeat the words,” Jeb said to him. “I, Osiris, feel the love of Isis in my heart, but still I am disassembled, still I am imprisoned in the land of dreams.”
Ever remained silent.
So Jeb kept talking: “Osiris feels the love of Isis in his heart, but still he is disassembled, still he is imprisoned in the land of dreams.”
“Now we must all dance to help Isis in her work,” Sky said.
Jeb shook the sistrum and music played from somewhere—flute, harp, drum.
The company began to dance with their hands in the air. “Feel the fire from the earth’s core rising up through your feet, up your spine to your heart,” Sky said. She lifted Izzy up from the ground and swayed with her in her arms. “Our Lady of Petals. The Great Mother,” the voices said. Izzy collapsed into the other woman’s flesh and scent.
Sky said, “As she dances, Isis remembers she is not a broken woman. She is a goddess! She is the daughter of the great goddess, Nut.”
Izzy tilted her head and looked into the woman’s eyes. Sky whispered, “Yes, yes, it’s all right. Repeat after me—”
Izzy couldn’t speak.
“My beloved, come back to your house, come back to me. I am Isis, your twin soul, your sister-wife, Isis. We are the children of the sky goddess, Nut,” Sky said.
Something was happening to Izzy. She was changing. Transmuting. Becoming another. Becoming herself. No.
Jeb said, “And as Isis weeps, Osiris awakens from the slaughter-house of night, from his dream of death, the slaughterer, and returns to light and life.” He gripped Ever’s arm and whispered into his ear again. When Ever didn’t respond, Jeb said, “Osiris hears the voice of Isis calling him back.”
