“Oh, an office romance?”
“Not exactly.”
Kira cocked her head. “Then who—” She gasped. “No!”
Zack covered his face with a hand. “Yes.”
“You broke one of your rules?”
“Kind of, yeah.”
“Zack Antonio Hall, please tell me you didn’t hook up with a client.”
“No, not that,” he amended. “I’m not that reckless, I swear. I just . . . He just . . . One of my new callers got under my skin somehow. He’s really sexy, and it’s driving me insane.”
“You know what he looks like?”
“Um, no,” Zack dithered. “But he has a nice voice.”
Kira raised a brow. “You realize how this sounds, right?”
“I didn’t before, but now that I’ve said it out loud, yeah, it sounds delusional. I don’t know if I want anything to come from this, but I do know that I had the best phone sex of my life today, and I have phone sex every day.”
“Huh,” Kira said. She drummed her glossy fingernails on her bottom lip. “Well, I have to say, it’s nice to see you interested in someone. You’ve been single for a while now.”
“I’m not interested in him. He’s just not as boring as my usual clients.”
“Uh-huh. If you’re not interested, then why can’t you get him out of your head?”
Zack opened his mouth only to shut it again with an audible click.
Kira looked triumphant. “That’s what I thought.”
“Well, it’s a moot point anyway. He’s a client. I’m a professional. All the information we have on each other is fake, and millions upon millions of people live in this city. I could pass him on the street tomorrow and never know it.”
“But you are going to talk to him again, right?”
Zack nodded. “After the session we had today, yeah. I know he’ll call again.”
“What if he calls you regularly for the next month? Or year? Or ten years? Would you really never try to meet him?”
“Kira, I want you to promise me something right now.” Zack schooled his face into a grave expression. “If I’m still having phone sex with strange men in ten years, euthanize me.”
“With pleasure.” Kira winked. “Now answer the question.”
Zack mulled it over and then said, “No, I would never meet him. He’s just one of the hundreds of lonely men who call me every month. He could have a wife and kids for all I know, or he might be ugly.”
“And people say love is blind.”
“Hey now, don’t go dropping the L word in my apartment. This is my safe space.”
“I just think it would be nice to see you date. And I don’t mean your idea of dating: picking up guys in bars, hooking up, and never calling them again. Life should be more than a string of one-night stands.”
“Says who? I’m only good at a handful of things, and sex is at the top of the list. Why not stick to my area of expertise?”
