  15. About the Author

Amy was drying herself when she thought she heard a telephone, far off and faint. After another minute, the cabin went dark. She froze, listening. She rechecked the lock on the door. The boat did that quick little rocking motion again. Gregory was ashore? The porthole over the sink gave her a view of the dock. She parted the curtain just as Gregory passed outside.

He got behind the wheel of the mangled car. Amy could hear the starter faintly — and briefly. At first she thought he had gotten the car running after all, but it didn’t move. Gregory got out and looked around him. Something was on his mind. He headed back for the boat and Amy felt him climb aboard.

The power did not come back on. Gregory definitely had something on his mind. Amy took another look at the porthole. Sam had given her a short course in the manufacture of fiberglass yachts at the time he taught her how to sail. The porthole was a stock item bought from a supplier by the boat builder, the glass hinged at the top to provide ventilation, covered by a tinted plastic mesh screen outside the glass. Even if the screen were removed, the unit was too small for a person to squeeze through. Amy quickly finished toweling herself, put on the nightgown she had chosen earlier, and opened the porthole. White, like all the others in this closet. White seemed to be Chino’s favorite color.

She heard a car approaching. When she realized that the sound was loud enough for her to see reflections of headlights on Gregory’s wreck and there weren’t any, the car itself appeared, a Benz, dark, windows down. She recognized Sam at the same time he started to slow down to look at the damaged Lexus.

“Sam! Look out!”

He was looking for her as Gregory started shooting, not from the back of the boat where she had thought he was hiding, but from the flying bridge above. Sam stepped on the gas and cut the wheel hard so the car seemed to rise up and come straight at her. The windshield shattered as the car skidded and slid broadside with the crash into concrete abutment. The horn blew.

“Sam!”
