- Sarah Bonner and Her Perfect Twin
I’m surprised, to be honest. Megan always struck me as the one who would have been into amateur dramatics, and music camp, and all the other things that the nerdy kids did at school so the popular kids would have something specific to bully them about. I would have thought Leah would have been out with all the boys.
“She never told you that, huh?” Megan asks. “Not her scene, that what you’re thinking?”
“She doesn’t strike me as the drama type, that’s all. I would have thought she’d be…”
“She liked to have people to boss around. The boys in the club would do anything for her. Like they were her very own entourage.”
Megan’s voice is tinged with the jealousy that rears its head whenever there is talk of boys and their teenage years. I know that Leah shagging her first boyfriend was a bit below the belt, but Megan was hardly whiter than white in all of that. Leah had confided in her twin, told her about the boy in the year above who Leah was into. Who Leah had lost her own virginity to. Megan had gone blabbing to their mum, their mum who by that time had found Jesus and was balancing on a soapbox of abstinence. She had gone batshit and marched into school, still dressed in her pajamas, and dragged Leah out of class by her hair, screaming that she needed to learn a lesson and wouldn’t be leaving the house until she apologized to God for allowing a boy to defile her. Of course, her mum had thoroughly failed to make Leah apologetic, and she had refused to stay locked up in the house. I do sometimes wonder if some of the more kinky things Leah had been into were really just to get back at her mum, like she could imagine the horror on the woman’s face if she knew what her darling angel was up to, and that was part of the appeal.
Megan and I haven’t really talked about my affair. I mean, it’s not like she has a leg to stand on. She murdered her sister. That is a tricky place from which to claim the high ground.
“You need to talk about her in the present tense, Megan.” Better for me to keep my own high ground and cut off any conversation that might circle to my infidelity.
“I’m not stupid, Chris.”
I want to laugh. We wouldn’t be in this mess if you weren’t. I don’t say it out loud. Especially as it’s not really true. She did save me a job that I had originally planned. I’m not sure I ever really wanted to dirty my hands with Leah’s murder. I just hope Megan behaves now. Does what she’s told. Staging her suicide sounds messy. Vomit with an overdose, all that blood if she slits her wrists in the bath.
“What are you thinking?” Megan asks.
“Hmm?” I snap back to the here and now, the deserted streets slipping past the windows. She’s confident driving here, after the month she lived here pretending to be Leah.
