In your Chevrolet
America is asking
You to call
SALLY: (Still sitting on floor.) See, Lucy even wants you to stay.
Drive your Chevrolet
Through the USA
America’s the greatest
land of all
(ROSCOE starts shaking his head side to side, which turns into a kind of spasmodic mannerism, as though he’s on the brink of a nervous breakdown.)

(ROSCOE picks up all the dumped items on the floor—carries them to the bed—dumps them in a pile—goes to suitcase, throws it on bed, and starts to repack; all the while he keeps his head going while beginning to emit a high, desperate squealing sound.)

ROSCOE: (Throwing things in suitcase.) No! No, she doesn’t! She’s the one—she’s the one who got me thinking about this whole thing. “Out of place,” she said! That’s what she called me. “Out of place”!

LUCY: I was only joking.

MABLE: She’s the joker.

LUCY: I’m always joking.

ROSCOE: No! No, no, no! I’m out of here! I’m so far out of here—

SALLY: (On floor.) Where are you going to go, Roscoe? Have you thought about that?

ROSCOE: (Packing and twitching desperately.) Of course I’ve thought about that! Of course! You don’t think I’d just—I’d just take off out of here without a plan—a destination—do you? Is that what you think?

MABLE: We don’t know what to think.

LUCY: You’re a mess, Roscoe.

ROSCOE: I’m a mess? I’m a mess?

SALLY: You won’t get very far. I can tell. You’ll break down somewhere.

MABLE: Yes. You’re headed for a very serious breakdown, young man.

ROSCOE: (Throwing things in suitcase.) I’m not young! I’m not young anymore!

LUCY: I’ll say.

(Throughout all of this, LIZ continues calmly and silently cleaning her shoes in the down right chair.)

ROSCOE: (To LUCY.) Shut up!

MABLE: (To SALLY.) Can’t handle the truth. That’s the major part of it.

SALLY: The truth is—he never loved me. I can see that now.

ROSCOE: I did—at one point in time—

SALLY: Ha!

(SALLY stands. Brushes herself off.)

ROSCOE: I did! I absolutely did! I can tell—I can tell when I’m feeling something. When something—

SALLY: What?

ROSCOE: Happens—you know.

SALLY: When something happens?

ROSCOE: When something begins to take place—take shape.

(SALLY walks directly over to ROSCOE’s bed and dumps suitcase just like the others.)

(Screaming.) NO!! Oh God. Oh my God!

MABLE: God won’t help you now.

ROSCOE: What have I done? (Holds his head with both hands to stop the shaking.) WHAT HAVE I DONE!! Why me? What have I done to you people? I’m just a visitor here. I haven’t done anything. I’m totally innocent.
