On another wall were a series of lab reports. April began taking notes. It was the second time she had tried to do it. Yesterday, she had gotten through only the first four. It would be so much easier to trust what the analysts told her, but she had done that on a case once, only to have a Congressional staffer who studied the lab reports prove that the lab had not only fucked up but that she and the prosecutor she was working with had missed that a fingerprint was not on a crucial car door. The case had to be dismissed, though luckily there were no public hearings. She had learned then, and many other times, that if you took something far enough apart, nobody did anything. It was like quarks. She had read something, it was a physics theory, about a cat being in a box in ninety-nine scenarios but not in the hundredth. So the cat existed and didn’t exist.
