Everyone gaped. For once, Buddy had them cold. He leaned against the wall and watched his family come to attention. They were a fascinating species.

“It’s true.” Lily was floored. “She’s wearing rings.”

“That doesn’t necessarily mean—” Cole began.

“Cole, stop it,” Debbie said softly. “No more.” He wrapped her in his arms. “You’re right,” he said. “No more. Not from any of you. Yes, we’re married. Not because I wanted to leave any of you out of the ceremony, but because I’d waited long enough for Debbie to be part of this family. I nearly waited too long. I wasn’t taking any more chances.”

“Makes sense to me,” Case drawled as he walked back into the room carrying his son. “Taking chances on women is deadly stuff. I can vouch for that.”

Lily smiled gently.

“If you want, we’ll have another ceremony,” Debbie offered. “I brought my mother’s wedding dress, just in case.”

“Far as I’m concerned, save it for your daughter’s wedding,” Case said. “Getting married once is enough for any man. Twice is above and beyond. Besides, if I remember my own, you two should be about ready for the honeymoon. Where are you going?”

“We’ll be gone until Wednesday,” Cole said.

His brother-in-law grinned at the neat way he’d sidestepped the question. It was understandable.

“Where will you live when you come back?”

Lily’s question took them all by surprise.

Morgan’s face fell. He could hardly face the thought of Cole leaving. And Debbie had become another daughter. But it was only fair that they had their time alone.

Buddy lost his calm demeanor. He’d come to depend on Debbie greatly. He liked having someone fuss over him, and he definitely liked the way she cooked. What would he—?

“Who’ll make me chocolate chip cookies?” Buddy asked aloud.

“I will, darling,” Debbie said. She felt Cole’s arms tighten around her. She could feel his approval. “And while we’re gone, I expect you to keep your room clean.”

Buddy nodded vigorously.

Cole laughed. My God, but marriage to her is going to be one wild ride through life! I can’t wait!

“And, I don’t want to come back and find out that there are no plates and glasses in the cupboards. Remember?”

“I remember,” Buddy promised.

“Morgan—”

He jumped to attention. Obviously he wasn’t going to escape the orders either. “If the twins come back while we’re gone, explain the situation. And, I don’t want to find out that you’ve quit your therapy.”

Her warning was enough. He hugged her and smiled. “I promise, too, girl.”

“How about me?” Cole whispered.

“Are you still here?” Debbie asked with practiced surprise. “Why aren’t you packed? We’ve got a honeymoon to start.”

“I don’t need to pack,” Cole drawled. “I sleep in the buff, remember?”
