CATHY. Hold me tighter. I won’t break.
He does. They draw closer. She lets her head rest on his chest. She lets go of his hand. His arms fall around her. Then he stops.
CATHY. What?
CHRISTOPHER. I . . .
CATHY [looking at him]. You got excited from that?
CHRISTOPHER. No, it’s not that.
CATHY. Yes, it is. I’ve seen it.
He turns away and stops the music.
CATHY. I’m not embarrassed, Christopher.
Christopher is silent.
CATHY. Do you think I’ll have as nice a figure as Momma’s?
CHRISTOPHER. You already do.
CATHY. Oh, so you admit to peeping?
CHRISTOPHER. No, I haven’t. I mean, not deliberately.
CATHY. How do you know, then?
He’s silent a moment. They stare at each other.
CHRISTOPHER. We should go to sleep.
CATHY. My breasts aren’t as big, are they? You know the human body. Are they still developing? Will I get bigger?
CHRISTOPHER. Cathy, stop.
CATHY. Why don’t you look at me just like a doctor and tell me?
He doesn’t speak. She starts to lower the top of her costume. He doesn’t move. She drops it to her waist. He looks and then he hurries to the bathroom. She pulls her costume back up.
CORY [crying out in his sleep]. Momma! Momma!
Cathy hurries over to him.
CATHY. What’s wrong, Cory?
She touches Cory.
CATHY [shouting]. Christopher! Christopher!
Christopher appears.
CHRISTOPHER. What’s wrong?
CATHY. He’s burning up, Christopher.
Christopher hurries to feel Cory’s forehead. Cory opens his eyes and immediately sneezes and coughs.
CHRISTOPHER. A bad cold.
CATHY. Now what? We’re locked in, and there’s no phone.
CHRISTOPHER. I’ve got that medical bag. I’ll give him some Tylenol.
CATHY. You’re not a doctor yet, Christopher.
Carrie wakes up and looks at Cory.
CARRIE. What’s the matter with Cory?
CATHY. He’ll be all right, Carrie. It’s just a cold.
Cathy embraces Carrie.
Christopher goes to his suitcase for the medicine.
CHRISTOPHER. We need to feed him liquids.
Cory sneezes and coughs.
CHRISTOPHER. Keep Carrie away from him.
CATHY. Yeah, right.
Cathy takes Carrie’s hand and steps back as if Cory has the plague.
CORY. I want Momma. Momma!
Christopher gets Cory to take the Tylenol. Cory coughs again and again.
CATHY. Christopher!
CHRISTOPHER. Don’t panic. You’ll frighten Carrie. Just wait.
CATHY. I’ll tap on the pipes.
She starts toward the bathroom.
CHRISTOPHER. Wait.
She doesn’t listen. There’s the sound of a pipe being tapped. After a moment, she reappears.
CHRISTOPHER. You didn’t have to do that.
CATHY. Maybe she’ll throw us out.
CHRISTOPHER. Get me a cold washcloth.
Cathy returns to the bathroom. When she steps back out, the door opens, and both Olivia and Corrine appear. They’re dressed as though for a formal dinner.
OLIVIA. What are you doing? If I wasn’t in the bathroom . . .
CORRINE. What’s wrong, Christopher?
CHRISTOPHER. He has a bad cold, fever. We need a thermometer.
CATHY. We need more than that. He should be taken to a real doctor.
Corrine looks at Cathy and then goes to Cory, who sobs and moans.
