“Matt! He would have killed us both if he discovered what we’ve been doing almost every afternoon. He was not a nice man.”

“He did not deserve to die.”

“Who deserves anything that happens to them? All I am saying is that David is the last person on earth you should feel sympathy for.”

“Except for the minor fact that he was just murdered.” Matt stared at her. “You haven’t felt any guilt over his death?”

Amy hesitated. “Of course it bothers me. When I was in jail, it was all I thought about. He was a lousy husband but he was a good father. He had his qualities. But on the whole he was a horrible person. He would have ruined our lives. The way I see it, it was him or us. And I chose us.”

“You think I was a coward not to do it myself?”

“I’m not saying that.”

“You don’t have to say it. You think it. You should have thought a little deeper before you murdered your husband. I warned you. What can go wrong usually does.”

“Who could have imagined that we were being followed?”

“They probably thought you had something to do with Jimmy’s kidnapping.”

“Do you think they followed me to the apartment?”

“No. They would have arrested us both. They would have wanted me more than you.”

Amy shook her head. “It’s so weird Charlie and Kelly just happened to be there.”

“They’re smart agents. They might have misunderstood what you were up to, but they knew you weren’t being straight with them. I warned you about that as well.”

“Don’t keep saying I told you so. It doesn’t help.”

“I understand.”

Amy took his hand. “You have to help met.”

“What kind of help are we talking about?”

“Don’t act like that. I’m facing life in prison. My lawyer, Trent, is supposed to be the best. But he’ll need something to work with if he’s to get me off.”

Matt spoke quietly. “Have you told him about me?”

“Of course not! I wouldn’t do that. How can you even ask?”

“Because of what you just said. You’re facing life in prison. Anybody might crack under such pressure. The closer the trial gets, the greater the pressure will get. You’re smart enough to know that if you bring me up, you’ll throw a wrench into the whole works. You might be able to mess up the prosecutor’s case enough to create reasonable doubt. Don’t look so offended, you must have thought about it.”

“I swear to you, I haven’t.”

“I don’t believe you. That’s why I want to warn you that I’ve removed every trace of evidence from my apartment. The police can scan that suite with a microscope and they won’t find a single hair or scrap of my skin.”
