“What do you mean, why? I can’t be hiding aboard when it’s discovered David is missing.”

“Why don’t you jump overboard when we’re creeping through the harbor?”

“That’s what I’ll probably have to do. But I don’t like it.”

“Why not?”

“The longer I’m on board after David goes in the water, the more vulnerable I am. I need to think about this.”

“No one will know you’re on board,” Amy said.

“We’ll see. You should discover that David is gone the moment Gilbert docks.”

“Not before?”

“No. You only wake up when he docks. You discover David is missing. You have no idea what happened to him. Don’t suggest he fell overboard. Let the others do that. Carl will call the police and the Coast Guard. The cops will question you at length. Does anyone know you and David have marital difficulties?”

“I’m sure his dad knows.”

“How does he feel about you?”

“Carl likes me. He loved Jimmy. He feels terrible about what happened with the kidnapping.”

“He won’t suspect you?”

“No. Impossible.”

“I wouldn’t count on that. David is his only son. When he’s dead, you’ll see a whole new side of Carl.”

“You’re wrong. Carl will never accuse me.”

Matt took a long time responding.

“Exactly how well do you know Carl?” he asked.

“What is that supposed to mean?”

“Nothing.”

“That is such a shitty comment. You owe me an apology.”

“I owe you nothing after what you did the other night.”

“We have been over that. Why do you have to bring it up?”

“It’s not like you were ten minutes late to a dentist appointment. I’ll bring it up whenever I wish.”

“Look, you’re the one who said what we’re trying to do is critical. We have to trust each other or this is not going to work.”

“Trust is built up between two people over time. When I came back to you, you promised to be straight with me. Well, you lied to me again. How am I supposed to trust you now?”

“If you don’t trust me, then how can we do this together?”

“I have asked myself the same question,” Matt said.

“Are you backing out?”

“No. But I’m keeping my options open.”

“Which means what? You might run off with Jimmy when my back is turned?”

“I’m not saying that. But you sleep with David again and I swear to you I’m out of here with Jimmy.”

“I don’t want to sleep with David! I want to kill him!”

“Shhh. Keep your voice down. Someone might hear.”

“No one can hear us,” Amy said.
