Was Matt Connor really a bad guy?
She had taken the apartment in his complex because she wanted to answer that question. But doing so compromised her relationship with the Bureau. She could get in serious trouble withholding information on such a sensitive case. Especially in light of her handling of the Acid Man. But her feeling on the matter was … fuck them, she owed her conscience greater allegiance.
Still, Matt had kidnapped someone else’s kid. He probably was psycho. Moving into the apartment two stories below, she figured she could spend time with him, confirm her worst fears, and then call in Charlie and Vicki, no harm done. They would privately chew her out but cover for her officially. Once more she could be the hero, and perhaps this time her efforts would be acknowledged.
Yet, from the moment she met Matt her fears grew.
For reasons she had not anticipated.
First, there was the obvious physical similarity between Jimmy and Matt. That resemblance had not been apparent in the pictures Amy had shown them of the infant Jimmy. When she saw the two together by the swimming pool, she knew Matt was the father. Talk about throwing a wrench in the works. Kidnapping one’s own kid was still illegal, but it radically altered the complexity of the crime.
Then there was the way in which they related to each other. Matt was not merely a good father, he was a goddamn saint when it came to his son. Jimmy was clearly happy in his arms. It made her shudder to think of sending the kid back to an asshole like David.
Nevertheless, these were secondary matters to Kelly. She still would have turned Matt in if she had not slowly begun to understand that he was the main victim in the whole goddamn scenario. Sure, she had known since her visit to Santa Barbara that Amy had screwed another guy behind his back and then dumped him like garbage. But talking to him over several days, Kelly had come to grasp the depth of Amy’s manipulation. It went beyond mere lying and cheating. Because Matt was not blind to Amy’s lies. He was too smart to be fooled, and he had been more than warned. Nevertheless, he chose to ignore her contradictions. The distinction was subtle but disturbing. Amy had not conquered his head, but had somehow managed to destroy his heart.
She was a psychic surgeon. She was a fucking vampire.
