She holds her hand out towards him and Anthony enters the room. He embraces her. Mickey stares at them for a moment, then finds a reason to go.
Mickey … I’ll get the ice.
Mickey leaves the room, closing the door behind him.
Judy Anthony –
Anthony Yes.
Judy I want you to help me with something.
Anthony Anything.
Judy I need to get over to the window – help me up.
He helps her to her feet.
Now stay there. Don’t move.
She crosses to the window.
Anthony What are you doing?
She proceeds to throw the pills out of the window, a few at a time.
Judy … Feeding the pigeons. Take a look in half an hour – half will be doing cartwheels – and the rest in a coma.
She makes herself laugh, but the laughter becomes tears and pain.
… I’m never taking these again. Not ever. (She turns to him.) Does that make you happy?
Anthony More than you realise.
He goes over to the window and sits on the ledge beside her.
Judy You were told to stay there.
Anthony Oh, since when have I ever listened to you? … I think you should phone and cancel the shows right now.
Judy Oh, I – I don’t think I can. Mickey doesn’t want me to.
Anthony Never mind what Mickey wants.
Judy … It’s only a few more shows. And then … we’ll settle into a little house, and have a most wonderful marriage.
His head drops.
… You don’t approve …?
Anthony Of course I don’t.
Judy Oh, he’s not so bad. He’s my protector. He’s young and he’s handsome – and he loves me. It’s a miracle.
Anthony That’s one word for it.
Judy You’ll see. We’re going to have a wonderful wedding – here in London. In Chelsea. You’ll come along.
Anthony No, I won’t.
Judy Yes, you will. I’ll let you be bridesmaid. And we’ll have a reception at Quaglino’s. It will be full of stars – Bette Davis, Veronica Lake, Lana Turner, Ginger Rogers –
Anthony None of them will come.
Judy What?
Anthony None of them will be there, Judy. They don’t want to see you making a fool of yourself.
She slaps his face – and breaks away from him. She heads back to the sofa.
Judy You should be happy for me!
Anthony Why? When he’s not remotely right for you in any way. He’ll never give you what you need.
Judy Which is?
Anthony Love. Unconditional love.
He approaches her.
… Which is what I’m offering you.
Judy You?
He sits next to her on the sofa.
Anthony … I’ll care for you. You’ll never do anything you don’t want to. You’ll come and live with me … I’m not wealthy, but – I have enough. I can give piano lessons and I have money put away for a rainy day. And in Brighton, we get lots of those … But it doesn’t matter, because we can sit inside. There’s a big bay window, and it’s so beautiful – you can watch the waves crashing in as the rain drums on the roof and – it’s warm … and comfortable … just sitting there looking out at the world.
