Anthony Oh. Well, in that case – Yes. For about six months now. I broke up with someone over the summer.
Mickey Who was he?
Anthony His name was Nigel. He was Australian, a dancer. We were together for quite some time … and then he went.
Mickey (drily) Suicide?
Anthony No. He just moved on … To a woman, in fact.
Mickey (smiling, intrigued) Really?
Anthony Yes, I thought you’d like that.
Mickey A woman. Wow … You drove him straight…!
He has a good laugh over this.
Anthony I’m so pleased to have amused you. You’re such a confidence booster – they should hire you out.
Mickey Well, be fair. You have to admit it’s funny.
Anthony Actually, no. It was extremely un-funny. I liked him a lot.
A brief pause. They drink.
… And what about you? Turned any women lesbian this month?
Mickey … Not this month.
The phone rings. Mickey grabs it.
Mickey Yes? … Right, okay. (Puts the phone down.) She’s on her way up.
Anthony How is she?
Mickey The porter’s carrying her.
We hear Judy from the corridor.
Judy (offstage) Hey – put me down … I said – put me down, you idiot!
The hotel Porter walks into the room, carrying Judy in his arms. She looks wretched. There is a large graze on her forehead, red and bloodied. Anthony rushes forward.
Anthony Oh my God, your head! What happened?
Judy What are you asking me for? How the hell would I know! (To the Porter.) Put me down!
(To the others.) I think he’s hanging on to me till he gets a tip.
Anthony grabs some coins from his pocket and gives them to the Porter, who unceremoniously dumps Judy down onto the sofa.
Anthony Thank you. I’ll get something for that graze.
He goes back into the bathroom as the Porter exits.
Mickey Where the hell have you been?
Judy Don’t you raise your voice to me!
Mickey I wasn’t!
Judy I know, I’m just warning you not to! I’m entitled to go out on my own sometimes, you know. I am a card-carrying adult – alright!
Mickey You’re drunk as hell.
Judy That’s right. And I love it. You should try it too, Mickey. People might like you more.
Mickey Oh, why don’t you fuck off.
Judy Hey – I’m Judy Garland – you show me some respect!
Mickey And I’m your fiancé. So why don’t you start to fucking earn it!
She grabs the bowl of fruit and hurls it across the room at him. It misses him and smashes against the wall, the fruit flying everywhere. Anthony enters, managing to avoid the tumbling fruit.
Anthony I found some antiseptic.
Mickey When you’re done, hide it, or she’ll try and drink it.
Judy Oh – suck my dick!
Anthony Judy – I need to bathe that wound.
Judy What?
Anthony You have a nasty graze on your forehead.
