Knopp, Guido: Top Spione (1997), and the TV programme that this was published in association with (ZDF 1994); or, better still, the transcript of the interview conducted with Guillaume by Knopp and Steinhauser that was obtained for me from ZDF (TV2) by Stefan Kroner, though this seems not to have been published. It appears to be the full text of a conversation from which only excerpts have been used in the programme itself, though it has no date or other indication of its provenance. The assessment of Guillaume's reports as it appears in the files of the Stasi comes from a contribution by Stephan Konopatzky to a conference on the role of the Stasi in the West, in November 2001, organised under the auspices of the organisation that now holds the archive, the office of Die Bundesbeauftragte für die Unterlagen des Staatssicherheitsdienstes der ehemaligen DDR (the Federal Commissioners for the Documents of the State Security Service of the Former DDR).

Other characters in the story

Wolf, Markus (with Anna McElvoy): Man Without a Face (1997). His memoirs, in English. Very lively and absorbing, and apparentiy frank about many things, though reserving the right to silence on others.

Genscher, Hans-Dietrich: Erinnerungen (1995). Memoirs. In English as Rebuilding a House Divided (1995).

Brandt, Rut: Freundesland (1992). Her memoirs, and as engaging as Frau Brandt herself.

Schmidt, Helmut: Weggefdhrten (1996). Memoirs.

Leugers-Scherzberg, August H.: Die Wandlungen des Herbert Wehner, von der Volksfront zur Grofien Koalition (2002). This is the standard biography of Herbert Wehner, but it takes him only as far as the Grand Coalition. Until the next volume appears:

Leugers-Scherzberg, August H.: Herbert Wehner und der Rücktritt Willy Brandts am 7. Mai 1974 (in the Vierteljahreshefte für Zeitgeschichte, Part 2, April 2002).

Nollau, Günther: Das Amt (1982) Memoirs. Relevant extracts in Der Stern (11 September 1975).

Ehmke, Horst: Mittendrin (1994). Memoirs.

Bahr, Egon: Zu meiner Zeit (1996). Memoirs.

1 More property the MfS, the Ministerium für Staatssicherheit, which was responsible for both internal surveillance and for the foreign intelligence service. The latter, the HVA, the Hauptverwaltung Aufklarung (Chief Reconnaissance Directive), was the arm controlling Guillaume.

2 Often known in English as the GDR, but this seems as awkward to me as it would be if in German the USA became the VSA.

1 Guillaume calls it a woodworm, but I'm informed by experts on infestation that if it knocked or ticked it must have been a death-watch beetle.

1 Any account of the case has to rely heavily upon press reports (often remarkably divergent) because in German law there is no such thing as an official transcript of the proceedings, only a summary of the evidence made by the court as part of its judgement.
