Guillaume (with Brandt and Bauhaus) Frimmersdorf . . . Koblenz . . . Darmstadt . . . Suit pressed, clean shirt . . . Who's who in Frimmersdorf, what's what in Darmstadt . . . Uli - another bottle . . . ! Sign hanging in the cloakroom of the Bundestag: Members Only. Scrawled across the bottom: Also hats and coats . . . Neumarkt . . . Regensburg . . . Also hats and coats . . . Neumarkt. . . Regensburg . . . Straubing . . . A listener writes to Radio Yerevan: 'Is there life on Mars?' Radio Yerevan replies: 'No, there is no life on Mars, either . . .' Look at them out there, Chief! All those faces gazing up from the darkness! Two words from you that's all they want! 'Dear friends . . . dear friends . . .!' No? Look at her, then! The way her eyes are fixed on you! The softness of her cheeks as she smiles! And those two women further back. And more women, further back still, that you can't quite see. And more again at the next station. So many of them, Chief! So many different roads you could take!

Brandt What have I done with my life, Günter? Moved on, moved on. Adapted, adapted. Turned my back on anyone who ever loved me. Forgotten anyone who ever helped me on my way. Shed my skins, one after another, like a snake . . . On and on the stations come. Plattling, Vilshofen, Passau . . . Willy Flamme, Karl Martin, Felix Franke . . . One face after another. One defeat after another. And where do I end up? On a train, travelling from nowhere to nowhere, to no point or purpose, making my confession to Pastor Nobody.

Guillaume (with Kretschmann) It doesn't work any more, Arno. Not even the train. Then we're back in Bonn . . . and there's another problem. They're tailing Christel.

Kretschmann She's certain?

Guillaume Certain.

Kretschmann You want us to withdraw you?

Guillaume Too late, now they're on to us. Everyone will know it's true. A spy in Willy's own office! That really will finish him. And anyway . . .

Kretschmann He'll know.

Guillaume Stupid, isn't it? He's going to know sooner or later. And half of me longs to tell him!

Kretschmann But face to face.

Guillaume Not just run away, like a naughty little boy.

Kretschmann You want to see the look in his eyes as he feels the knife go in.

Guillaume I want him to see it was hard for me, as well as for him. Anyway, it may be a false alarm. Christel's up for a job in the Ministry of Defence. Routine check of some sort.

Kretschmann Lie low for a bit. Take a holiday. Somewhere in the sun. Some place where the skies are blue all day. Wait and see.

Genscher (with Brandt and Nollau) I understand that Herr Guillaume is out of the office today.

Brandt Taking a well-deserved holiday.

Genscher The best part of a year has gone by since you authorised Herr Nollau to place him under observation. I have been pressing Herr Nollau to tell me whether we now feel able to present the case for prosecution.
