Guillaume Thank you, Uli. - I pack up all my copies of the incoming and outgoing messages in that one, and put it in the boot of my car. This one I fill up with the little souvenirs that the Chief hands out on our travels. Then . . . -Uli!

Bauhaus If you're going to ask me to carry something back to Bonn for you . . .

Guillaume Classified documents, Uli.

Bauhaus I've got all the Chiefs bags already. I've got five jars of pickled mushrooms.

Guillaume Uli, you're a trained security officer.

Bauhaus Yes. Not a porter.

Guillaume You're flying. I'm driving.

Bauhaus Certainly not your porter.

Guillaume Uli, if anything should happen to these papers while they were in the boot of my car . . .

Bauhaus It wouldn't be my responsibility.

Guillaume I'll tuck it under your arm, look. Now, don't let that box out of your sight, Uli. Not for an instant. Thanks, Uli. You're a pal.

Bauhaus I can't even draw my gun!

Guillaume If you need to draw your gun, Uli - drop the mushrooms. - And my fears are fully justified. We stop for the night at a hotel in Sweden, and I lock the box of souvenirs in our room while Christel and I go dancing. I have a strong suspicion when we get back that somebody has let themselves in and photographed the entire collection.

Kretschmann - Worked like a charm. Thank you.

Guillaume — So now we're back in the Palais Schaumburg. And even if any suspicions crossed the Chiefs mind up there in Norway they've soon vanished into the autumn mist, because everything's even worse than it was before. There are wildcat strikes in the metalworking industry. The dustmen aren't emptying the dustbins.

Kretschmann - Sixty million Germanys!

Guillaume - Helmut's raging away.

Schmidt Someone's got to stand up to these people! Someone's got to do something! Make some decisions! Give this government a sense of purpose and direction!

Guillaume - And where's Uncle off to?

Ehmke (with Wilke and Guillaume) Can you believe he actually said it? Even Herbert Wehner?

Wilke 'What the present German government lacks is a head.'

Ehmke At a press-conference! In Moscow, of all places! We've only just established normal relations! The entire world waiting to hear what he's going to say!

Wilke 'The Chancellor's asleep on his feet. He's lost in a world of his own . . . Quite frankly I have never taken this government seriously as a government . . .'

Ehmke Who put him up to it, though? You know the Russians are telling us in private that he's having more secret meetings with his friends in East Berlin?

Wilke What East Berlin is telling us in private is that the Russians are lying.
